The School of Nursing at the University of Virginia invites applications for the Systems Engineer position.

Position Summary:
Systems Engineer 2 employees support the stability, integrity and efficient operation of the in-house information systems that support core university functions. This is achieved by developing, monitoring, maintaining, supporting and optimizing software and associated hardware and operating systems. They provide functional and empirical analysis related to the design, development and implementation of systems, including hardware, utility software, development software and diagnostic software. They provide system integration and security plans and implementation. Systems Engineer 2 employees are distinguished from Systems Engineer 1 employees by their higher-level technical skills and application of skills to their work, typically longer-term and varying work activities, latitude to apply skills to solve routine problems without review, and some latitude to devise the approach and method to performing assignments. They perform routine, daily activities without supervisory intervention, seeking assistance when guidelines are inadequate, significant deviations are proposed, or when unanticipated problems arise. For longer-term assignments, they work under immediate supervision. Systems Engineer 2 employees train, serve as a resource, and provide guidance to Systems Engineer 1 employees on routine problems, processes and policies. Their interactions are typically with fellow team members and assigned student, faculty and/or staff clients. They may work with external vendors or service providers. They begin working toward specific team goals.

  • Work with functional counterparts to design and develop configurations, complex workflows and system integration procedures utilizing Microsoft Windows. Document deployed systems and their integration points. Create test plans and perform regression testing and white box testing as modules are integrated into the end systems.
  • Formulate and define specifications for operating software programming applications or modify/maintain existing applications using engineering releases and utilities from the manufacturer.
  • Participate in the initial configuration and ongoing enhancements to the operating system's application architecture. Assist with application upgrades, application tuning, support for data conversion processes, development of interfaces, assistance with performance and load testing, and support of the application security environment.
  • Design PowerShell and automation scripts. Participate in the development of test strategies, devices and systems. Design and develop software to automate, monitor, test, deploy and support systems. Perform regular tests of the high availability, disaster recovery, security and backup processes.
  • Manage the staging environment used for final pre-deployment testing and verification using Microsoft Deployment Server. Manage systems with KACE, JAMF and MobileIron. Build physical and virtual servers.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to customers regarding applications and participate in upgrades and system enhancement projects. May assist other systems programmers to effectively utilize the systems developed.
  • Function as a member of the core security team.
  • Implement disaster recovery procedures and ensure that systems meet high availability standards.
  • Design and maintain classroom technologies.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS, computer engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
