Supervisor, Sterile Processing

Directs daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department at the University of Virginia Health System, including organizing staffing and monitoring of work quality. Provides leadership direction and oversight for the development and implementation of Sterile Processing high-level disinfection and sterilization policies, procedures and processes. Responsible for ensuring instrumentation supplies and other key resources are available in a timely manner to support surgical services and other dependent areas.
  • Ensures the standards of operation of the department comply with the standards set by regulatory agencies such as the Virginia Department of Health, Joint Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation Commission, and others.
  • Responsible for the operations and processes associated with the decontaminating, prepping and sterilization of instruments.
  • Provides direct supervision to SPD personnel.
  • Hires, evaluates the performance and provides corrective action as necessary for SPD personnel. Develops criteria/expectations for staff in meeting goals of the department.
  • Communicates in timely consistent manner.
  • Assigns and prioritizes workload. Evaluates and standardizes operating procedures and effectively troubleshoots and resolves issues and problems as they arise.
  • Reviews and approves time-off requests, monitors attendance and tardiness, and ensures adequate coverage for all areas of responsibility.
  • Encourages mentor and facilitates the career development of the employees in the department. This includes, but is not limited to, department orientation in-service training and continuous education of Sterile Processing staff.
  • Develops and implements departmental performance improvement activities and ensures ongoing staff participation.
  • Reviews customer feedback, i.e., the Main OR OPSC and clinic leaders, in order to respond, compile and analyze supporting data to implement beneficial procedural changes as appropriate and feasible.
  • Acts as a champion of the SPM Instrument Tracking System.
  • Performs system administrator duties and utilizes and maintains the system.
  • Utilizes the system's reporting capabilities to identify opportunities for improvements within the department.
  • Ensures the physical environment is maintained.
  • Establishes and enforces fire and safety regulations for the area following established protocols and ensuring compliance with JCAHO OSHA AAMI and hospital guidelines.
  • Identifies areas for self-improvement and actively seeks opportunities to strengthen and expand skills and abilities.
  • Attends seminars and training sessions to maintain appropriate level of professional competency.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Position Compensation Range: $54,558.40 - $87,297.60 Annual

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Associate's degree preferred.
  • Experience: 3 years of progressive leadership experience within sterile processing required, preferably in a hospital setting. 3 years of experience working within sterile processing.
  • Licensure: Certification as Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) through IAHCSMM OR certification as Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through CBSPD required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 50-100 lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, heat, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
