The University of Virginia's Department of Student Health and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking to hire a full-time mental health professional for the position of Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded in the School of Medicine (SOM).

The Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded is a staff member of CAPS and provides mental health services to SOM students in the medicine, biomedical sciences, and public health programs. The Embedded Psychotherapist also collaborates with SOM faculty, staff, and administrators to provide outreach and consultation regarding student mental health needs.

Competitive candidates will have experience working with multicultural populations, graduate students, and/or individuals working in the health professions. Job responsibilities include providing triage and intake assessments and brief individual psychotherapy. In addition, the position often requires making referrals to, and coordinating care with, CAPS psychiatric providers, as well as facilitating referrals for students wishing to connect with psychological and psychiatric services in the community. This position may also engage in supervision and didactic seminars to trainees in CAPS' APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology.

Responsibilities include:
  • Staff Psychotherapists provide individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and clinical consultation. They manage outreach initiatives and programming. They conduct clinical interviews to obtain a comprehensive patient overview and discuss educational history, physical and mental health issues, social factors, substance use.
  • Conduct screening and comprehensive diagnostic psycho-educational evaluations.
  • Provide consultative and resource services to healthcare providers, as well as University faculty.
  • Provide direct supervision and interactive teaching to trainees in psychology.
  • Lead business and staff meetings, committees, and special projects.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Licensed as a mental health professional in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or license-eligible; must be licensed within 6 months of hire). Must provide proof of credentials as part of the pre-hire process.
  • Master's degree in counseling or social work or PhD/PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology.
  • At least four years of professional experience providing psychotherapy to adults or adolescents, including a minimum of 1 year of experience with risk assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge and competency in culturally informed therapeutic approaches.
  • Experience with brief models of psychotherapy.
  • Crisis management skills, including experience with risk assessment, safety planning, and facilitating inpatient hospitalization.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • Working on a college or university campus.
  • Leading psychotherapy groups.
  • Providing outreach, including experience developing presentations and speaking to diverse audiences.
  • Supervising therapists-in-training.
  • Providing mental health support to individual in the health professions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
