Specialty Pharmacy - Ambulatory Staff Pharmacist

Pharmacist ensures the safe, effective and financially responsible use of medications by providing optimal drug product selection, dosage regimen design, effective administration and drug therapy monitoring services in the Health System Specialty Pharmacy.
  1. Responsible for evaluating, preparing and dispensing of medications. Verifies prescribed medications according to professional standards, facility procedures and state and federal legal requirements.
  2. Consults with patients regarding individual medications or supplies prescribed, including dosage, frequency, specialized requirements and possible drug interactions.
  3. Interacts closely with individual patients in order to answer all questions and/or concerns regarding their medication therapy.
  4. Reviews and evaluates patient's plan of care for therapeutic appropriateness.
  5. Participates in achieving business goals and metrics for the specialty pharmacy, including assisting in marketing events and promotions.
  6. Assists in the fiscal management of the specialty pharmacy to optimize profits and control expenses for the specialty pharmacy, consistently consulting with the other relevant managers and directors.
  7. Assists with managing all functions for the specialty pharmacy technicians, such as hiring, training, terminating and performance management as assigned.
  8. Monitors the overall performance of all specialty pharmacy staff members to ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational policies, practices and approved pharmaceutical dispensing processes.
  9. Assists in maintaining and executing all established procedures concerning quality improvement, quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and recordkeeping.
  10. Submits, reviews and handles all adjudicated prescription claims to ensure appropriateness of reimbursement, co-pay and related financials. If needed, follows up all such claims deemed inappropriate.
  11. Provides consultation on pharmacy and therapeutic matters to various levels of organizational personnel.
  12. Supervises activities relative to patient profiles and contacts, ensuring that they are updated as needed for insurance verification and regulatory compliance.
  13. Participates in departmental meetings and in-service training for pharmacy technicians.
  14. Works collaboratively with organizational personnel on quality, satisfaction, service excellence, clinical care, etc., as needed.

Position Compensation Range: $50.43 - $80.69 Hourly

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: Bachelors of Science degree or PharmD degree from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Experience: Normally requires one (1) to three (3) years of directly related and progressively responsible retail/ambulatory care pharmacy experience.
  • Licensure: Commonwealth of Virginia State Board of Pharmacy license. American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.

  9. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  10. Knowledge of the 340b drug program
  11. Knowledge of specialty pharmacy operations is a plus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing and traveling for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull <20 lbs. May be exposed to chemicals.
