The UVA School of Data Science is looking for a motivated Senior Web Developer to join our team to transition and maintain our public web presence (Drupal), as well as provide online portal (O365/SharePoint) and system integrations support.

The School of Data Science (SDS), guided by common goals, seeks to further discover, share knowledge, and make a positive impact on society through collaborative, open, and responsible data science research and education. With both standard computing as well as a focus on research and data analysis, and high-performance computing, the school will position the university and our community to play a national and international leadership role in the global digital future. While this position offers exciting opportunities for growth in these areas, knowledge of these areas is not a requirement for this position.

The Senior Web Developer is an important member of our IT support team, working directly with the Communications team and faculty, staff, as necessary.

This position will:

  • Transition and maintain the public web site for the school of Data Science (transition from 3rd party support) in Drupal
  • Develop custom forms or programs designed to enhance user appeal and utility as well as the site's overall functionality.
  • Create web front-end user interfaces to new or existing databases to make business applications web accessible. Develop custom code to integrate UVA and third-party applications to web platforms where necessary - SDS uses Oracle (SIS), Workday, Salesforce, and O365/SharePoint, in particular.
  • Use knowledge of programming and server software operations to develop complex custom programs designed to enhance user appeal and utility as well as the public site and internal intranet overall functionality.
  • Design, develop, deploy, maintain and troubleshoot complex Internet-based applications for the School of Data Science.
  • Integrate existing and new Internet-based applications with university-controlled and foreign resources using various integration strategies and technologies.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for applications.
  • Responsible for requirements gathering and articulation of user interface issues, including development of page/site prototypes.
  • Experience and interest in collaboration tools such as SharePoint and Office365, software/web development tools, web technology and web-technical support is important, but most important is an attitude of being willing to learn, jump in, research solutions, be a team player and make things happen.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree and 3 years relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people and in a support role.
  • Desire to learn and apply new knowledge, amidst a solid customer service mindset.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience in Drupal, Website and/or O365 maintenance and support.
  • Skillset includes, but is not limited to: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP.
  • Comfortable implementing reactive front-end application architecture (Nuxt.js).
  • Knowledge and/or experience in working with website design and maintaining a high aesthetic quality on a website.
  • Knowledge of UVA and collaborative applications (MS O365, Teams, Sharepoint, ServiceNow, Netbadge/authentication, Zoom, etc.).


Anticipated Hiring Range: $82,000 - $95,000
