A&S Learning Design and Technology at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Senior Instructional Designer.

A&S Learning Design and Technology is a faculty support unit of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. We are an active team of instructional designers and technologists committed to:
  • Supporting faculty in their teaching through consultations, programs, communities, funding, and incubation of special projects, as well as promotion of active and inclusive approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Facilitating access to specialized learning spaces, including active learning classrooms, studios, language learning spaces, equipment collections, and maker spaces.
  • Identifying effective instructional technology and software, including supporting LMS use and design, exploring emerging and experimental technologies, and consultation on technology selection and use.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with faculty, A&S LDT colleagues, and campus partners to facilitate authentic, engaged, inclusive teaching and learning in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (CGAS). UVA is currently transitioning to Canvas as our new learning management system, and A&S LDT instructional designers will play an integral role in facilitating this transition. Working across all modalities, with a focus on in-person learning, A&S LDT instructional designers offer pedagogical and technical support to faculty exploring the incorporation of new learning technologies in their courses. In collaboration with instructional technologists, A&S LDT instructional designers facilitate use of innovative technologies, equipment, and spaces, including active learning classrooms, studios, and maker spaces. A&S LDT Instructional designers at times serve on teaching, learning, and technology committees and collaborate with University colleagues to support the teaching mission of CGAS and the University.

Responsibilities:
  • Support faculty transition from teaching in UVACollab to Canvas through consultations, workshops, educational materials, University committee service, and collaboration with campus partners.
  • Consult with faculty from diverse disciplines to meet their instructional goals with specific discipline or other areas of focus to be developed in consultation with the Director and instructional design team.
  • Facilitate faculty exploration of new learning technologies, approaches, and spaces across diverse modalities with a focus on in-person learning.
  • Collaborate with diverse groups of University staff and other stakeholders.
  • Develop educational materials to support faculty in using new technologies and design approaches.
  • Manage specialized learning spaces or studios as needed.
  • Supervise student staff as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • 5 years of directly relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree
  • Proven effective communicator
  • Successful experience in providing pedagogical consultation and support to faculty in a higher education environment
  • Demonstrated facility with common learning technologies and eagerness to learn about and support learning technology

The Senior Instructional Designer will report to the Director, A&S Learning Design & Technology.

The anticipated start date is Decemeber 5, 2022, with the option to work remotely through January 13, 2023. Thereafter, the position may be eligible for a hybrid weekly schedule in consultation with the Director. This is an exempt-level, benefited position. Anticipated Hiring Range: $71,000+

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
