The University of Virginia's Department of Psychology seeks applicants for a Lab and Research Technician 2. The Lab and Research Technician 2 will provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. They may handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technicians 2 perform under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

Job duties will include the following:
  • Providing support for the ongoing daily operation of a systems-Level Neuroscience laboratory.
  • Assisting with the technical aspects of the research project that examines the central nervous system development and plasticity of the taste system.
  • Responsible for the breeding and maintenance of animal colonies of mammalian species.
  • Responsible for histological analyses and collection of images with a confocal microscope.
  • Maintaining lab supplies and equipment.
  • In addition to the above, other duties may be assigned.

The applicant should meet the following minimum requirements:
  • Basic understanding of biology (e.g., molecular, cellular and systems) and chemistry (e.g., molarity and dilutions).
  • Fine finger manipulation and dexterity; the ability to handle tissue and devices used in standard biology labs.
  • Computer applications: Excel, Word.

The ideal candidates will also meet the following preferred requirements:
  • BA or BS in biology, chemistry, neuroscience or other majors with an emphasis in neuroscience is preferred.
  • Preferred Experience: Some: up to 2 years. Preferred: lab tech experience with animal colony breeding. We are also highly interested in someone with excellent organizational skills.
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Embedding and sectioning tissue for light microscopic experiments, immunohistochemistry and mouse colony oversight.

This position will remain open until filled. This is a non-Exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability and performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: Associate's degree.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
