The Biocomplexity Institute and Initiative (BI) at the University of Virginia is seeking applications for a Pandemic Science Program Manager to become a key member of the Prominence-to-Preeminence (P2PE) STEM initiative entitled "PREPARE: An Integrative Science Program in Pandemic Science and Response." The initiative will collaborate with researchers in UVA Health; the College of Arts & Sciences; and the schools of Data Science, Engineering and Medicine with the goal of reducing the global burden of infectious diseases through technology and engineering. This exciting new interdisciplinary endeavor is part of UVA's 2030 plan to contribute knowledge aimed at addressing major societal challenges and opportunities.

The Pandemic Science Program Manager is responsible for managing a number of different program elements from research support and recruitment to the coordination of submissions to federally funded programs to meet program sustainability requirements. BI embraces a support model that provides flexibility in key assignments while maintaining critical path career opportunities. Additionally, BI offers a flexible hybrid workplace, providing a balance of in-person and remote work for each employee. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with colleagues using a variety of technologies and tools. Due to the collaborative nature of our work, team members are expected to be present and attend team meetings and other critical functions in person. Depending on the needs of the group, or as deemed by the manager, team members may be required to work periodically in open offices, meeting rooms or other shared workspaces.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA at the UVA Research Park, 994 Research Park Boulevard.

Applications will be considered at both the Project Manager and Senior Project Manager level, determined by experience and qualifications.

Essential Responsibilities Include:
  • Coordinating with staff to develop processes necessary for personnel recruitment, tracking, planning and execution of associated projects and deliverables.
  • Analyzing short-term and long-term resource needs and adjusting staffing and resources appropriately.
  • Consistently applying standard project management methodology and processes to ensure completion of deliverables and adherence to timelines; track milestones and timelines across projects; and recommend necessary workflow, personnel and financial resource allocations.
  • Planning, leading and facilitating project team meetings.
  • Developing detailed task lists, reviewing program effort assignments and short- and long-term resource allocation plans based on input from all key players and team members.
  • Proactively identifying changes in work scope and ensuring appropriate planning measures are taken.
  • Developing detailed budgets and schedules based on task breakdown, materials, information and resource allocation plans.
  • Managing the collection of clear, consistent and standard data for project initiatives.
  • Coordinating, developing and collecting data to support all reporting requirements.
  • Coordinating outreach and other initiative-sponsored events.
  • Serving as a point of contact and collaborating with partner organizations, including school and department personnel.
  • Serving as liaison among initiative members, functional area management (research administration personnel, financial staff, recruitment) and program leadership.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree and at least four (4) years of relevant experience to be considered for the Project Manager level role. At least seven (7) years of relevant experience for the level of Senior Project Manager. Experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability to handle multiple, competing and simultaneous priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team, as well as possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with senior leaders to accomplish goals.
  • Ability to access and present information to university employees, faculty and senior leaders.
  • Experience with Microsoft suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with research and research administration processes at UVA.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Project Management Institute (PMI) sertification.
  • Experience working in higher education, government, research institutions or other closely related organizations.
  • Experience with or demonstrated interest in one or more of the following fields: science and technology, data science, engineering, medicine or pandemic science.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $85,000 - $95,000, commensurate with candidate's experience and qualifications, with UVA benefits.

This position will remain open until filled with a proposed start of February 2022.

This is an exempt-level, benefit-eligible position. All roles within the institute are restricted positions and are dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.
