This is a patient- and team member-focused role that is responsible and accountable for various aspects of clinic operations, specifically focused on inbasket pool management, managing protocol workflows for prescription refills and orders, pre-visit planning worksheets, patient consent, care coordination and functioning as liaison between clinic operations and access. Performs technical, administrative and clinical functions related to specific areas of responsibility.

Answer patient calls and perform an extensive number of data collection functions as delegated by the physicians to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients.

Escalate calls based on diagnosis rubric.

Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.

Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assessing extra-ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assessing angles, pupillary dilation and all other patient services as requested by the physician, including specialty tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing and exophthalmometry.

Perform lensometry and specialized testing, such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical biometry (IOL Master).

Assist with fitting of contact lenses and instruct patients in care and insertion of lenses.

Support prior authorizations and requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician with full documentation in patient chart.

Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and postoperative instructions as directed by physician.

Check expiration date and inventory of medicines and replace as necessary.

Maintain inventory and order diagnostic medications and supplies.

Manage ambulatory protocol orders in Epic for assigned clinical team.

Reconcile consents for surgery.

Coordinator for pre-visit planning.

Facilitate patient education.

Perform ophthalmic tests.

Perform ophthalmic measurements.

Perform visual field testing.

Perform ocular motility clinic area and equipment.

Maintain inventory and manage use of supplies and resources, as well as assess opportunities for good stewardship and cost-effectiveness.

Investigate, document and resolve problems and complaints in collaboration with manager.

Perform technical/clinical/administrative responsibilities in assigned work area. Assume responsibility for professional development of self and contribute to and assists with the professional development of others. Ability to utilize train the trainer approaches with team members. Coordinate with staff, physicians and manager daily clinic flow processes. Relationships with staff in other work areas are fostered to meet internal and external customer needs. Assist manager with contribution in team member performance review process. Assist manager in the hiring process with participation in the peer interview process.

Position Compensation Range: $19.49 - $30.21 Hourly
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: 3 years of relevant experience.

Licensure: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification by Joint Commission of Accredited Health Professionals in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) or certified as Contact Lens Technician or Registered Optician with the Commonwealth of Virginia required. American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross BLS certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling: (distance: 50 feet) and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 50–100 lbs. May be exposed to blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
