The Office of Health Promotion (OHP) at the University of Virginia is seeking a Nutrition Educator to promote wellbeing among students, faculty, and staff. The person in this position will provide nutrition education and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for students and will provide training and education support for faculty, staff, and students. This position is part of a team of Nutritionists within the Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) in the Office of Health Promotion. This is a full-time University Staff position with all state benefits.

The main focus of this position is to provide clinically appropriate nutrition education and MNT toward the collaborative management of eating disorders and other medical and mental health concerns utilizing a weight-neutral approach and Health At Every Size (HAES) model. Additionally, the incumbent will support evidence-informed nutrition training and education for SHW providers, staff, and trainees, dietetic interns, Peer Health Educators, and the broader University community as appropriate. This position reports directly to the Senior Nutrition Educator in SHW.

Responsibilities include:

Clinical nutrition services (80%)

  • Provide nutrition education and MNT within SHW to student patients presenting with health and wellness concerns including cardiovascular health, diabetes, digestive disorders, eating disorders, food allergies/intolerances, polycystic ovary syndrome, sports nutrition, weight management, and vegetarianism.
  • Coordinate care with other multi-disciplinary healthcare treatment team providers as a member of the Student Health & Wellness Eating Disorders Consultation and Treatment Team.
  • Facilitate referral to community providers as needed.
  • Document care in the Electronic Medical Record (Medicat).
  • Practice in alignment with a weight-neutral approach and HAES model.

Administrative (10%)

  • Collaborate with nutrition team to develop and maintain policy, procedure, and forms.
  • Participate in quality improvement, to include treatment outcomes research, peer review, and SHW committees.

Health Promotion support/training (10%)

  • Provide nutrition training/education for professional healthcare providers and trainees (CMEs), dietetic interns, Peer Health Educators, and the broader University community as appropriate.
  • Deliver classroom presentations upon request

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $50,000 - 65,000 per annum.


  • Education: Bachelor's degree
  • Experience: Two years experience as nutritionist or dietitian
  • Licensure: Registered Dietician through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)/Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) required.


This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The University will perform background, health and drug checks on all new hires to the Department of Student Health and Wellness prior to employment.
