Nurse Manager - Preoperative Evaluation & Optimization

Manages the operations of a patient care program (Pre-Operative Evaluation and Optimization), which is a new, expanded focus for Pre-Anesthesia and Evaluation Testing Center. Combined, these programs will be composed of nurses, psychologists and advanced practice practitioners while partnering with physicians using evidence-based medicine to evaluate, prepare and optimize patients for surgical and interventional procedures. Additional responsibility for nurses providing preoperative phone call communication. Leads the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) nursing program, as well as so much of their protocols are in the preoperative preparation and education.
  • Manages and supports the day-to-day operations of assigned patient care area(s)/program(s). Supervises all nurses and support staff including, but not limited to, advanced practice providers, registered nurses, patient care assistants and technicians. Oversees the preparation of schedules, utilizing wage and flex staff as appropriate. Adjusts according to patient flow.
  • Accurately forecasts and manages budget for the unit and ensures that any expenditures are within the budget. Knowledge of related benchmarks, such as paid hour per patient day and worked hour per patient day.
  • Develops programs that address continuous quality improvement, system enhancement, streamlined processes, patience experience and overall nurse performance.
  • Joint development of preoperative optimization metrics in collaboration with medical director. Establishes goals and objectives with medical director to achieve these metrics.
  • Ensures compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements specific to the area supervised. Ensures that the highest-quality nursing care is provided to patients and their families.
  • Develops and manages partnerships with clinicians, physicians and administrative counterparts to achieve common goals. Promotes integration of multidisciplinary work groups.
  • Manages recruitment, performance, team member engagement and retention activities of assigned staff.
  • Implements the UVA shared governance nursing model at the unit level, ensuring shared decision making that affects nursing practice, quality improvement, professional development and research.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Position Compensation Range: $81,078.40 - $129,729.60 Annual

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from accredited nursing program; master's degree in related field within 5 years of hire.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of progressively more responsible supervisory experience (preferably at the manager level) as a registered nurse in a patient care environment required; five years preferred
  • Licensure: License to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia required. American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification required. Valid Virginia driver's license required for managers with responsibility operations in multiple locations.

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping and reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive). Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 50-100 lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

COVID Vaccination Requirement

Due to the scope of President Biden's Executive Order 14042 issued in early September, all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption. The University has updated policy SEC-045 to reflect these new requirements.

If hired by the Academic Division, excluding School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UVA Physicians Group, and the Health Systems Library, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to be vaccinated by January 4, 2022.
