5 Central is a 28-bed, high-acuity, surgical acute care unit specializing in pre- and postoperative care of patients undergoing general, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgeries and procedures. 5 Central also provides care to trauma patients and patients undergoing gynecologic surgeries.

Registered Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants provide care using a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4 or 1:5. Clinical outcomes exceed national benchmarks and we take great pride in excellent nursing care. 5 Central nurses advance on the clinical career ladder and take advantage of opportunities to support nursing students in clinical experiences, participate in research and quality improvement projects, and practice in a healthy work environment.

This position is for an entry-level professional nurse focused primarily on developing knowledge and skills. Provides safe patient care at a basic level and shows growth in ability to care for increasingly complex patients. Manages care and implements treatment plans at a basic skill level in collaboration with patients, their families, physicians and other members of the healthcare team. Requires consultation with more experienced clinicians and benefits from feedback.
  • Assesses the physical psychological social and cultural dimensions of patients according to professional practice standards and institutional policy/procedure at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Organizes, prioritizes and coordinates nursing care activities considering the needs of the patient at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Implements patient population-specific interventions based on individual patient needs at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Effectiveness of care and care coordination, progressing patients toward desired outcomes at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Develops and implements patient/caregiver teaching plan based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Provides for a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and contributes to and assists with the professional development of others at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Demonstrates leadership in the delivery of patient care at the Clinician 1 level.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Position Compensation Range: $27.00 - $44.36 Hourly

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree preferred.
  • Experience: No experience required.
  • Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 20-50 lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

COVID Vaccination Requirement

Due to the scope of President Biden's Executive Order 14042 issued in early September, all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption.
