Lab and Research Technician 2 employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia is hiring a Laboratory Technician to conduct research into the development and function of neural circuits underlying auditory perception (please see the lab website at

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, attentive to detail, and capable of working independently. Will assist in a variety of day-to-day research activities, including (but not limited to) the following:
  • Small animal surgery (e.g., stereotaxic injections, electrode implantation) husbandry and genotyping.
  • Tissue processing for electrophysiology or immunofluorescence.
  • Maintaining lab supplies and equipment.
  • Breeding colony management.
  • Developing and maintaining custom lab software.
  • Training, documentation and animal protocol management.
  • Participating in research work involving experiments with animals, to include care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during postoperative or treatment periods.
  • Coordinating and participating in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to research staff in testing, determinations and experiments.
  • Assisting in evaluating research methods, procedures and techniques, based on established objectives.
  • May perform certain surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Assisting with training other staff members on procedures. May supervise students or volunteers.
  • Assisting principal investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.
  • Assisting principal investigators with data management, software development and other computational support tasks.
  • Providing routine, technical and administrative support to research projects.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.

This is a restricted position contingent upon continued funding.

  • Education: Associate's degree required. BS or equivalent degree preferred.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Preferred Experience: Up to four years of experience in one or more of the following is preferred: small animal surgery, husbandry or operant behavior; molecular biology; histopathology or immunofluorescence; intracellular or extracellular electrophysiology; computer programming in Python, C/C++ or JS.
  • Licensure: None.

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
