The Karsh Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia (KIOD) seeks a dynamic, collaborative and proactive Managing Director. The new public-facing, pan-university institute is designed to project the University's commitment to democracy and help strengthen democratic institutions, practices and culture.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Karsh Institute's Managing Director will be charged with directing the daily operations of the Karsh Institute, ensuring the appropriate resources and support are in place to execute the strategic goals set by the executive director.

Consistent with the University's goal to be "great and good," the Karsh Institute will articulate, support and sustain values fundamental to democratic society while envisioning and helping to create a future when democracy's aspirations and reality are one. The Managing Director will play a critical role coordinating, facilitating, ensuring alignment of, and executing strategic initiatives in a clear and compelling way.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Serve as member of the KIOD executive leadership team composed of the executive director, academic director, communications director, director of programming and managing director.
  • Work directly with KIOD directors to ensure alignment between strategic plan and day-to-day operations of KIOD.
  • Identify new opportunities to deepen strategic plan and enhance tactics.
  • Supervise administrative and finance staff.
  • Provide operations support and direction to Democracy Labs managers.
  • Serve as KIOD advisory board secretary, maintaining communications with board members and organizing Karsh Institute board meetings.
  • Serve as point of contact between KIOD and University and College advancement staff.
  • Serve as senior KIOD representative at internal and external operations-oriented meetings.

Qualified candidates must have:
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • At least eight years of increasingly responsible experience. Relevant exempt-level experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Extensive experience as a managing director or in a similar role.
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategic and business plans.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to excel in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Experience organizing and executing budgets.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

The anticipated start date is June 20, 2022.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $125,000 - $130,000, commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt-level, benefited position.
