The Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine, seeks a Laboratory and Research Technician 2 to work in the lab of Dr. Anne Sperling. The Sperling Lab studies the role of the immune system in lung diseases such as asthma and pulmonary fibrosis. The successful candidate will be an important member of the research team and will take on more independent roles as they develop skills. They will also have the opportunity to develop their research skills, participate as a co-author on manuscript preparation and publication, and gain knowledge about scientific and medical fields. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Provide laboratory support to the research interests of Dr. Anne Sperling.
  • Work with animal models.
  • Assist with maintenance of transgenic mice colonies, collecting tails for genotyping, running PCR and updating the databases.
  • Under the supervision of the principal investigator and/or senior lab members, assist in maintaining laboratory inventory and equipment, ordering of supplies and training of students on laboratory procedures, when required.
  • Participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to research staff in testing, determinations and experiments.
  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
  • May perform certain procedures on small lab animals.
  • Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.
  • Participate or lead research projects.
  • Perform routine laboratory procedures.
  • Learn to independently prepare solutions and reagents.
  • Resolve problems and work accurately and with attention to detail.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualified candidates must have:
  • Education: Associate's degree.
  • Experience: At least two years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Ability to analyze and organize work procedures, plan and execute tasks or experiments, and interpret and report findings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel is required.

Preferred experience:
  • Experience working actively in a research laboratory preferred.
  • Knowledge of immunology and immunological techniques.
  • Expertise in statistical and data analysis software, database software and imaging and/or image analysis.

Physical demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
