Laboratory Technician 1 or 2, Advanced Microscopy Facility

The Advanced Microscopy Facility (AMF) at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine seeks Laboratory Technician 1 or 2 to support the overall technical activities of its laboratory. The incumbent will provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in complex scientific experiments. They may handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab Technician employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

Lab and Research Technician employees focus on performing routine research tasks and developing skills. They assume routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures. Lab and Research Technician employees perform tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities include:
  • Performing similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens; setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions as instructed.
  • At direction of principal investigator or senior staff, performinh biological, hematological, chemical or physical analysis.
  • Participating in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals, to include care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during postoperative or treatment periods.
  • May perform some surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Preparing support materials, comparing and assisting with analyses of data and write reports. Assisting with literature reviews.
  • Operating, adjusting and maintaining specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Ordering lab supplies and maintaining inventory.
  • Recording accurate information and logs of experimental data.
  • Keeping informed of new lab techniques.
  • Providing routine, technical and administrative support to research projects.
  • May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results. May provide logistical support to the study.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Lab Technician 1
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Lab Technician 2
  • Education: Associate's degree.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

Priority application review will begin on March 31, 2022. However, the position will remain active until filled.

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.

The successful candidates will pass a criminal background check and pre-employment health screening.
