The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist or Laboratory Specialist – Intermediate to participate in studies of the role of antibodies in cardiovascular disease and allergy. This position provides technical support to a basic science research laboratory consisting of graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and technical staff. The tasks involve a combination of general laboratory duties, including maintenance of a mouse colony (genotyping, husbandry, database management), the inventory of lab supplies, maintenance of lab equipment, and making common laboratory solutions. The Lab Specialist will work closely with the PI and other lab members to learn and perform a variety of experimental procedures including, but not limited to, tissue harvesting and preparation, confocal microscopy and flow cytometry to examine the immune response.

Desired candidates should have experience in the following areas: general biological procedures and techniques; animal procedures; general computer skills; working both independently and with others in a highly collaborative, team-based environment; attention to detail; and strong communication skills. Expertise in protocol and SOP development, ACUC, IRB, EH&S and other local, federal or sponsor-driven regulations and policies is desirable.

The specific responsibilities of the position include designing and optimizing laboratory procedures, conducting experiments, recording and analyzing results, providing training on laboratory techniques, supervising laboratory technicians, managing common lab space and resources, serving as lab contact person for the different university offices (CIC, safety, etc.) and sales representatives, preparation of ACUC and IRB protocol applications, etc.

Minimum Requirements for Lab Specialist:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: Three years of experience, which may include student experience. Six years of experience in a science-related field accepted in lieu of degree. Experience gained as a student may be considered.
  • The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand.
  • Preference to those with animal research experience.

Minimum Requirements for Lab Specialist – Intermediate:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: Six years of experience in a technician or other science-related role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. Nine years of experience accepted in lieu of degree. Experience gained as a student may be considered.
  • The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand.
  • Preference to those with animal research experience.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
