Laboratory Specialist or Intermediate, Advanced Microscopy Facility

The Advanced Microscopy Facility (AMF) at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine seeks Laboratory Specialist or Intermediate to support the overall technical activities of its laboratory. The incumbent will provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in complex scientific experiments. They may handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab Specialist employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

Responsibilities include:
  • Coordinating and participating in a variety of routine technical duties.
  • Handling and processing biological samples.
  • Knowledge and ability to execute routine laboratory procedures, including sterile technique, pipetting, use a fume hood, etc.
  • Responsible for laboratory organization and maintaining equipment.
  • Cooperation with clients of the core, scheduling samples drop-in and drop-off.
  • Assisting with microscope training. May assist students or staff with imaging.
  • Maintaining good communication with core clients (researchers).

Preferred Skills:
  • Ability to accurately prepare solutions and reagents.
  • Ability to follow set policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work accurately and independently with attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan and execute tasks or experiments in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact with people on a daily basis.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements of Laboratory Specialist:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree. Preference for bachelor's degree in biomedical/biological sciences or similar.
  • Experience: 3 years of experience in basic science research. 6 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree. Preference for experience working with different laboratory techniques, including microscopy.

Minimum Requirements for Laboratory Specialist – Intermediate:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree. Preference for bachelor's degree in biomedical/biological sciences or similar.
  • Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role in basic science research. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree. Preference for experience working with different laboratory techniques, including microscopy.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

Priority application review will begin on March 31, 2022. However, the position will remain open until filled.

Physical Demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.

The successful candidates will pass a criminal background check and pre-employment health screening.
