The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist, intermediate or senior, to participate in studies of the role of clonal hematopoiesis in age-related diseases. This position provides scientific/technical support to a large cardiovascular research laboratory consisting of a mixture of graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows and technical staff. The tasks involve a combination of general laboratory management and the coordination of activities involving ultradeep DNA sequencing to examine the associations between somatic mutations and disease features in patient cohorts.
Desired candidates should have experience in the following areas: managing a complex research-based laboratory; protocol and SOP development and maintenance; general biological procedures and techniques; training of faculty and staff; managing multiple programs and resources or a centralized/specialized core; management of quality control and good laboratory practices; and directing and validating compliance with IRB, GLP, EH&S and other local, federal or sponsor-driven regulations and policies. Expertise in analyzing next generation sequencing data and expertise in R and/or other programming language (e.g., Python) is desirable.
The specific responsibilities of the position include designing and optimizing laboratory procedures; conducting experiments; recording and analyzing results; providing training on laboratory techniques; supervising laboratory technicians; managing common lab space and resources; serving as lab contact person for the different university offices (CVRC, safety, etc.) and sales representatives; preparing IRB protocol applications, etc.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
