The Center for Research in Reproduction (CRR) has an opening for a Lab Specialist – Intermediate due to retirement. This position provides assay services for investigators within UVA and NIH-supported investigators (both clinical and basic) across the country. The incumbent performs duties to include data reduction and management, correspondence with investigators, and billing for services. The individual will cross-train on the Core's equipment and be the primary operator of the IMMULITE 2000.

Tasks that applicant should consider as independent daily responsibilities:
  1. Make independent decisions regarding reproductive research and daily activities, and ensure all research activities comply with research protocols and regulations.
  2. Research background to forecast which supplies are needed to perform reproductive research activities for a specific period.
  3. Incumbent documents requests made from within and outside the University regarding research experiments and prioritizes workload to ensure deadlines are met.
  4. Independently triage, set deadlines, record, monitor, run required tests and follow protocols and guidelines.

Tasks that will be in consultation with Core Manager and Director:
  1. Decisions made regarding assay schedules or other duties (e.g., data reduction, creating work lists, sample organization, billing) to be discussed with the Core Manager daily.
  2. Troubleshoot assay issues with Core Director and/or Manager.
  3. Decisions regarding evaluating new methods, data management and long-term goals discussed with Core Director and/or Manager.

A qualified applicant would possess a bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry or life sciences and would preferably have the following knowledge or skills:
  1. Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and practices.
  2. Ability to perform high-complexity assays, prepare reagents and use common lab equipment.
  3. Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
  4. Ability to communicate with investigators, research coordinators and Core staff.
  5. Knowledge of University, state and federal policies and regulations.
  6. Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).

The Ligand Assay & Analysis Core within the CRR is a laboratory that provides assay services to clinical and basic scientists across the country. Employees who work in this environment will be subject to the following conditions/exposures:
  1. Handling human blood samples (BSL2) and radioactive (I-125) and hazardous chemical materials.
  2. Operating various electrically powered lab equipment, including centrifuges, gamma counter, IMMULITES, beadwashers, plate washers and plate readers.
  3. Walking/standing on concrete/tile floor.
  4. Employees are required to receive an annual flu vaccination and must be vaccinated for COVID-19.

The hiring level of the position will be determined based on education, skills and experience.
This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 6 years experience in a Lab Technician role

The successful candidate will pass a criminal background check and pre-employment health screening.
