The Center for Immunity, Inflammation, and Regenerative in the Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Specialist in the Fu/Sung Lab. The Lab Specialist will be responsible for providing direct research support for studies on immunity in lupus nephritis.

The laboratory is seeking individuals interested in research on immune responses in autoimmune diseases. Animal disease models are used to investigate cellular and biochemical pathways involved in the development of organ damage in the kidney. A mouse colony with different mutations is studied to define molecular functions involved in immunoglobulin production and renal functional defects. Biochemical methods such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western blotting, colorimetric assays, and cellular analyses such as flow cytometry and immunofluorescence microscopy are used in determining functional end-points.

Duties include:

  • Maintaining mouse colony, genotyping, book-keeping
  • Performing mouse experiments
  • ELISA and colorimetric assays for metabolites and protein products
  • Protein analysis by Western blots
  • Cell staining and analysis by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence
  • Cellular analysis, tissue culture
  • Reagent preparation
  • Management of laboratory supplies
  • General laboratory maintenance
  • Data management


  • College degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or Biology, with background in
  • Chemistry
  • Laboratory experience
  • Some expertise in computing and statistics preferred
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
