Laboratory Specialist

The Derré Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating the mechanisms supporting Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, microscopy and small animals (mice) techniques. Research activity conducted includes, but is not limited to, maintenance of eukaryotic cell lines, generation and amplification of Chlamydia strains, general molecular biology techniques (cloning and sequence analysis, immuno-precipitation and western blot), image acquisition of Chlamydia-infected cells or tissue by standard and confocal microscopy, image analysis using microscopy computer software, and small animal (mice) handling and infection.

  • Education: BS degree in biological sciences is required. 6 years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience is required. 4 years of experience in a research laboratory is preferred. Experience in cell culture and sterile microbiology techniques. Experience in small animal handling. Proficiency in molecular biology, including, but not limited to, PCR amplification, western blotting, plasmid construction and cloning is preferred.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Accuracy and attention to details. Work concurrently on several projects and meet deadlines. Demonstrated initiative in decision-making and problem solving. Computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Self-motivation and eager to acquire new skills.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
