Laboratory Manager

The Biorepository and Tissue Research Facility (BTRF) is seeking a full time Laboratory Manager to provide complex technical services and supplement laboratory management in support of new digital spatial gene expression profiling technologies and service activities.


Position responsibilities include:

  • Developing, designing and conducting complex research projects including, evaluating findings, preparing comprehensive reports and participating in discussion of research protocols and objectives.
  • Working closely with team members to provide effective solutions to support business and quality objectives including coordinating service activities with other labs.
  • Supervising lab staff and participating in the development and implementation of lab policies and procedures; ensuring that lab personnel maintain current knowledge of lab techniques, procedures and equipment operation.
  • Working with and advise clients to support their research and service needs.
  • Maintaining liaison with investigators, research personnel, and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Advising on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintaining conformance with specific operational standards.
  • Managing reporting, monitoring, resources and laboratory personnel.
  • Establishing and improving procedures and processes by addressing issues and risks.
  • Managing a large complex laboratory operation, with responsibility for the quality and quantity of the work of others, proper maintenance of laboratory conditions, safety procedures, equipment, instruments and supplies, files and records.
  • Preparing budget requests and managing approved budgets.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • MS degree or higher (PhD preferred) in science or related discipline with a variety of knowledge in the areas of Immunology, Biology and Molecular Biology, and at least 3 years experiences in flow cytometry and immunostaining.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the technical specialty, appropriate to the BTRF lab activities, and proven ability to apply a wide range of concepts, techniques and practices to carry out broad laboratory objectives.
  • Proven ability to evaluate and produce reliable results, problem-solve and troubleshoot the complex problems.
  • Knowledge of technology appropriate to the technical specialty.
  • Demonstrate managerial and supervisory ability and well-developed leadership skills.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot complex problems with laboratory equipment; design and construction capability may be required in some specialty areas.
  • Effective data trending, document control and technical bench skill.
  • Strong problem-solving, training, team building and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.



  • Education: Master's degree.
  • Experience: Four years of experience in lab technical and supervisory role.
  • Licensure: Medical Laboratory Technician certification preferred. Certain areas may require certification to be obtained through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).


This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
