The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia's (UVA) School of Medicine is seeking applicants for a Lab and Research Technician 1 or 2. The position will provide technical support for projects and may engage in complex molecular biology experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician employees assume routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures.
The successful candidate will be expected to:

Collect specimens and bacterial culture; set up and perform experiments of a repetitive nature; and prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions as instructed.

At the direction of the principal investigator or senior staff, perform biological, microbiological, hematological, chemical or physical analysis.

Participate in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals, including care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during postoperative or treatment periods.

May perform some surgical procedures on small lab animals.

Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data, and write reports.

Assist with literature reviews.

Operate, adjust and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments.

Order lab supplies and maintain inventory.

Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.

Keep informed of new lab techniques.

Provide routine, technical and administrative support to research projects.

May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake and record and track results. May provide logistical support to the study.

Qualified candidates must have:
Lab and Research Technician 1:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: At least one year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Willingness to work with animal models is required.
Lab and Research Technician 2:
-
Education: Associate's degree.
-
Experience: At least two years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Willingness to work with animal models is required.
Physical Demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. The anticipated start date is June 1, 2022. This position will remain open until filled. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.
