Lab and Research Technician

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory and Research Technician 2 to assist investigators with computational, in vitro and cell-based methodologies. The individual will be expected to provide research support for ongoing research projects related to colorectal, breast, and ovarian cancer. qPCR, enzyme assays, protein purification, western blotting, cell culture, and/or sterile technique and/or additional molecular biology experience will be necessary. The preferred candidate will have a bachelor's degree with lab experience, as well as experience with GraphPad Prism.

Duties Include:

Experimental work (75%)

  1. Perform and help optimize experimental assays and assist with the generation of novel research reagents and the characterization of small molecules.
  2. Perform qRT-PCR.
  3. Use sterile technique and perform EC50/IC50 determinations.
  4. Purify proteins and conduct enzyme assays.
  5. Perform Western blotting.
  6. Perform cell culture.
Laboratory maintenance & general duties (15%)
  1. Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance
  2. Make buffers and other reagents
  3. Maintain a laboratory notebook
  4. Be available to assist principal investigators as needed

Ordering & purchasing (10%)

  1. Process purchases for the lab using the UVA Marketplace
  2. Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products
  3. Return damaged or incorrect items
Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate's degree and at least 2 years of lab experience in an academic or industrial laboratory setting is required (which may include student experience,) OR Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related discipline.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint and Excel) is also required.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check and health screening per University policy.

Anticipated hiring range : $32,000 - $35,000 based on qualifications and experience

This is a restricted position and continuation is based on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.
