The Marie Lab in the Infectious Diseases department of the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a Lab and Research Tech 2 to assist with research investigating the pathogenesis of the parasite Cryptosporidium. The individual will assist in experimental work related to mouse and cell culture models of pathogenic infection, as well as the ordering and maintenance of lab supplies and equipment.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Perform infection of mice, whole animal imaging, and mouse tissue dissection.
  • Perform:
    • cell culture
    • flow cytometry
    • immunofluorescence
    • microscopy
    • PCR
    • immunoassays
  • Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance.
  • Make buffers and other reagents.
  • Clean and defrost laboratory freezers.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other laboratory documentation/paperwork.
  • Implement and follow all safety regulations.
  • Process purchases for the team using the UVA Marketplace.
  • Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products and best pricing.
  • Return damaged or incorrect items.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Physical demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.

Qualified candidates must have:
  • Education: Associate's degree.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with handling BSL-2 materials.
  • Experience with maintenance of mouse colonies.
  • Experience with UVA Marketplace.
  • Experience with PCR, cell culture, western blotting, nucleic acid extraction, RNASeq, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, microscopy, image analysis via ImageJ/FIJI, statistical analysis via R, and bioinformatics via R.
  • Experience with basic lab procedures and maintenance, including pipetting, preparation of simple solutions, and cleaning glassware.
  • Must be comfortable working with mice.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to respond to feedback.
  • Highly organized and reliable.
  • Experience working with mice.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. The anticipated hiring range is $15-$19/hour, commensurate with education and experience. This position will remain open until filled. This is a non-exempt-level, benefited position.
