Lab and Research Tech 2, Infectious Diseases and International Health (UVA)

The Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks candidates for a Lab and Research Tech 2 to work in the Houpt Lab. This work will involve travel to a collaborative research site in rural Tanzania. Responsibilities will include supporting laboratory and clinical research, day-to-day operations including some laboratory testing (with training), research recordkeeping, data management, and data analysis.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Travel internationally to Tanzania to assist with research.
  • Perform similar duties to the Technician 1, such as performing analyses; participating in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals, to include care and feeding, cage cleaning, and sanitization; observation during postoperative or treatment periods; and maintaining equipment and apparatuses.
  • Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to clinical and research staff in testing, determinations, and experiments.
  • Assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.
  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
  • May perform certain surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.
  • Assist principal investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.
  • May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results.
  • At the direction of principal investigator or senior staff, perform biological testing.
  • Participate in research or clinical work.
  • Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data, and write reports.
  • Record accurate information and logs of data.
  • Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualified candidates must have:
  • Education: Associate's degree.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Experience working in a lab environment.
  • Ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Physical Demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. This is a non-exempt, benefited position. The anticipated start date is October 10, 2022, but the position will remain open until filled. The anticipated hiring range is $15-$19/hour, commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.
