The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist Intermediate or Senior to participate in studies of the advanced imaging for studying treatable origins of atherosclerosis and aortic stenosis This position provides scientific/technical support to a large cardiovascular research laboratory consisting of a mixture of graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and technical staff. The tasks involve a combination of general laboratory management and research activities involving bench research and imaging pre-clinical models of disease.

Desired candidates should have experience in the following areas:

• Managing a research project.
• Protocol and SOP development and maintenance.
• General procedures involving murine models of disease, and histology and microscopy.
• Expertise in non-invasive imaging, cell culture and IACUC management is desirable.

 

Responsibilities of the position includes small animal surgical procedures and non-invasive imaging (ultrasound, PET, optical imaging), image analysis, data analysis, histology/microscopy, assays and communicating research results in the form of manuscripts and formal presentations. The position also involves maintaining databases, formulating new scientific hypotheses, preparation of reagents and contrast agents and maintenance and oversight of laboratory compliance with OHSU IACUC, DCM, Biosafety and radiation safety and DEA for use of controlled substances. This position also includes managerial roles of learners and others in the laboratory and requires communication with researchers within the laboratory as well as from other departments who uses the facilities and equipment.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Lab Specialist Intermediate

• Education: Bachelor's degree.
• Experience: Six years of experience in a technician or other science related role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. Nine years of experience accepted in lieu of degree. Experience gained as a student may be considered.
• The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills. Preference to those with histological understanding.

 

Lab Specialist Senior

• Education: Bachelor's degree.
• Experience: Nine years of experience in a technician other science related role or a Master's degree and 4 years experience. Twelve years of experience accepted in lieu of degree. Experience gained as a student may be considered.
• The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills. Preference to those with histological understanding.

 

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
