The Department of Medicine's Division of Allergy & Immunology at the University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Specialist or Labortory Specialist – Senior interested in research on the immune mechanisms of food allergy. The research group has a specific interest in the tick-acquired red meat allergy, also known as the "alpha-gal syndrome." Lab Specialists provide technical lab support by performing complex lab and research-related tasks. They act as specialists on research methods and equipment functions specific to investigations. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. Lab Specialists perform daily activities without or with minimal supervision; their longer-term assignments require greater oversight. Lab Specialists often train others on work processes and policies as needed.

Lab Specialist – Senior employees apply highly developed subject matter expertise to laboratory research. They are distinguished from Lab Specialist – Intermediate employees in the complexity of their work and their responsibilities for staff management. They assist in the administration and coordination of the technical activities of a scientific research lab. Lab Specialist – Senior employees assist principal investigators or lab managers by performing the following tasks: designing research methodologies, managing research projects, developing and administering budgets and schedules, following established quality standards, and analyzing data and performance metrics. They ensure that standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied. They employees may manage staff. They may co-author publications and co-present results with principal investigators.

Specific duties and responsibilities for this position include:
  • ELISA and other immunoassays.
  • Data management and analysis.
  • Reagent preparation, management of laboratory supplies, general laboratory maintenance.
  • Specialization in lab and/or other research methods and equipment functions specific to principal investigators and/or labs.
  • Demonstrate expertise in troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions. Perform a variety of tests requiring a high degree of proficiency.
  • Assist in evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives.
  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
  • Evaluate experiment results using statistical and multivariate analyses. Research, compile, and maintain complex statistical, numerical, and computerized reports.
  • Perform library and literature research.
  • Assist in instructing lab academic sections in lab methods, procedures, and safety.
  • Explain work instructions and may adapt general methods and procedures in order to meet the needs of the research.
  • Assist in training other staff members on procedures as needed.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum requirements for Lab Specialist:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree. Bachelor's degree in biology or related field preferred.
  • Experience: At least three years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Six years of experience will be considered in lieu of degree. Some expertise in computing and statistics and experience in biomedical research is preferred.

Minimum requirements for Lab Specialist – Senior:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree. Bachelor's degree in biology or related field preferred.
  • Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with master's or terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree. Some expertise in computing and statistics and experience in biomedical research is preferred.

This job can involve significant time standing while attending to experiments.
