The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism and the University of Virginia's (UVA) School of Medicine seek applications for a Lab Specialist to work with Silas Culver, MD. This position is responsible for developing, designing and conducting increasingly complex research projects, including molecular techniques, gel preps, tissue preparations for electron microscopy, confocal microscopy and staining, statistical analysis, graph production, poster creations and research paper writing for grants and presentations. The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to articulate information to investigators and other research team members.
The successful candidate will also be expected to:

Submit document requests made from within and outside the University regarding research experiments and prioritize workload to ensure deadlines are met.

Triage; set deadlines; record, monitor and run tests required; and follow protocols and guidelines.

Responsible for laboratory organization and maintaining equipment.
-
Confer with PI in developing plans for research projects and discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.

Participate in formulating research methods, suggesting options for improving quality and recommending solutions.
-
Specialize in lab and/or other research methods and equipment functions specific to principal investigators and/or labs.
-
Demonstrate expertise in troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions.
-
Perform a variety of tests requiring a high degree of proficiency.
-
Assist in the evaluation of research methods, procedures and techniques based on established objectives.
-
May perform small animal surgery.
-
Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
-
Evaluate experiment results using statistical and multivariate analyses.
-
Research, compile and maintain complex statistical, numerical and computerized reports.
-
Perform library and literature research.

Assist in instructing lab academic sections in lab methods, procedures and safety.

Explain work instructions and may adapt general methods and procedures in order to meet the needs of the research.

Assist in training other staff members on procedures.

Qualified candidates must have:

Education: Bachelor's degree with preference of bachelor's degree in biomedical/biological sciences or similar.

Experience: Three years of experience. Six years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Ability to plan and execute tasks or experiments in a timely manner.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate/interact with investigators and other core staff on a daily basis.

Knowledge of university, state and federal policies and regulations.

Knowledge and ability to execute routine laboratory procedures, including sterile technique, pipetting, using a fume hood, etc.

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
Physical demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. The anticipated start date is June 7, 2022. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
