Lab Specialist

The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics seeks a highly motivated lab specialist to join the Jomaa lab to conduct research on exciting projects investigating how newly made proteins are localized in subcellular compartments in health and disease. The laboratory uses a combination of integrative approaches, including molecular and structural biology, and biochemical techniques with main focus on single particle cryo-electron microscopy to isolate and then study snapshots of cargo while being delivered to its final destination in the cell.

Job responsibilities include:
  • Specializing in lab and/or other research methods and equipment functions specific to principal investigators and/or labs.
  • Demonstrating expertise in troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions.
  • Performing a variety of tests requiring high degree of proficiency.
  • Assisting in evaluation of research methods, procedures and techniques based on established objectives.
  • May perform small animal surgery.
  • Providing basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software. Evaluating experiment results using statistical and multivariate analyses. Researching, compiling and maintaining complex statistical, numerical and computerized reports.
  • Performing library and literature research.
  • Assisting in instructing lab academic sections in lab methods, procedures and safety.
  • Explaining work instructions and may adapt general methods and procedures in order to meet the needs of the research.
  • Assisting in training other staff members on procedures.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry or related science.
  • Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
