Lab Specialist

The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics seeks a Laboratory Specialist to work in the Ebrahim lab. The incumbent will be using high-resolution live cell and tissue-imaging approaches to interrogate cytoskeletal cell biology. Experience in cell/tissue culture and mouse work will be a plus but is not essential.

Lab Specialist employees provide technical lab support by performing complex lab and research-related tasks. They act as specialists on research methods and equipment functions specific to investigations. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. Lab Specialist employees often train others on work processes and policies.

Job responsibilities include:
  • Specializing in lab and/or other research methods and equipment functions specific to principal investigators and/or labs. Demonstrating expertise in troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions. Performing a variety of tests requiring high degree of proficiency.
  • Assisting in evaluation of research methods, procedures and techniques based on established objectives.
  • May perform small animal surgery.
  • Providing basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software. Evaluating experiment results using statistical and multivariate analyses. Researching, compiling and maintaining complex statistical, numerical and computerized reports.
  • Performing library and literature research.
  • Assisting in instructing lab academic sections in lab methods, procedures and safety.
  • Explaining work instructions and may adapt general methods and procedures in order to meet the needs of the research.
  • Assisting in training other staff members on procedures.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in biology or related discipline.
  • Experience: Three years of experience. Six years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
