The University of Virginia's Department of Engineering Systems and Environment seeks applicants for a Lab Manager. The Lab Manager will support in-laboratory and field-based education and research, as well as facility management for the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment.

The Lab Manager will oversee the activities in the Department's research and teaching labs. The incumbent will be responsible for procurement, setup, and maintenance of equipment and materials needed to facilitate teaching and research activities with undergraduate students, graduate students, research staff, and faculty. The Lab Manager will assist faculty with laboratory research and teaching needs to provide a robust academic experience for students by ensuring that all equipment is serviced and functional, all teaching assistants and students working with this equipment receive proper training. This will include partnering will be the department's safety officer, taking the lead on departmental field and laboratory safety needs, establishing, updating, and maintaining safety protocols, leading training of all users on departmental equipment, and ensuring the field and laboratory safety protocols are followed. The Lab Manager will supervise the work of a Departmental Lab Specialist and oversee the Instrument Maker's work with faculty, students, and staff to design, fabricate, and maintain special use equipment and tools that enhance the research and teaching capabilities of the department.


  1. Master's degree with at least four years of experience in lab technical and supervisory role is required.
  2. Preference will be given to candidates with a Graduate degree in a field related to advanced analytical instrumentation for structural, geotechnical, and/or environmental engineering analyses.
  3. Familiarity with advanced analytical equipment for engineering education and research is required.
  4. Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis and more than 50 pounds occasionally.
  5. Must have computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and laboratory instrument control.
  6. The ability to convey clear directions to students and faculty about laboratory activities is required.
  7. Must have the ability to assess potential budget impacts of purchases and activities.
  8. Prior experience managing an environmental, geotechnical, and/or structural engineering laboratory is preferred.
  9. Ability to comprehend and implement engineering principles is preferred.
  10. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated record of safety training and experience leading training sessions.

This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position.
