The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging is seeking an Intermediate Lab Specialist to participate as a key team member within the Research Division. The incumbent supports the research activities of a neurotrauma-focused laboratory and provides daily oversight to include experimental management, expenditure management, Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) compliance management and coordination of laboratory meetings. In addition, the incumbent performs animal experiments and surgical procedures, provides animal care and handling, and collects data and samples. Other responsibilities of the incumbent include performing laboratory maintenance, providing experimentation documentation, and ordering laboratory supplies.

Specific responsibilities include:

Laboratory Management

• Coordinate regular meetings with PI to determine how experiments should proceed to remain on course with program sponsor requirements to meet milestones for the research effort.
• Coordinate with members of the laboratory and with collaborating laboratories to schedule and conduct experiments.
• Manage animal protocol and environmental health and safety compliance issues.
• Schedule and coordinate periodic laboratory meetings.

Animal Experimentation

• Perform animal handling and surgical procedures in laboratory.
• Perform animal care following the Animal Care and Use Committee approved protocols to include administration of anesthesia, exposure of animals to experimental models of traumatic brain injury, and post-procedural monitoring with administration of analgesia if necessary.
• Collect data and samples.

Procurement

• Inventory supplies daily and place orders as needed.
• Maintain ordering log spreadsheet on laboratory computer and file receipts with the departmental finance office.
• Assure that orders are filled promptly and that any shipping error or damages are reconciled within three days.

Record Keeping

• Keep records of experiments in laboratory notebook and in electronic form on server.

Laboratory Maintenance

• Provide routine maintenance of laboratory equipment as per manufacturer recommendation. Contact manufacturer to arrange maintenance as needed.

• Ability to collect data or samples. Knowledge of analytical techniques in chemistry, biology, or a related science. Knowledge of general laboratory procedures and equipment.
• Ability to plan and execute tasks or experiments. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office, including MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of histopathology, histochemistry, microscopy and small animal imaging.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree, preferably in Biology, Chemistry, or related science

Experience:

• 6 years of experience in a lab technician role, preferably including at least 2 years of related experience doing complex experimentation, which may include graduate student experience.
• Master's degree may substitute for required experience.
• 9 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
