Position Summary:
Using current learning theories, instructional design models and best practices, the Instructional Designer incorporates current educational technologies to promote effective teaching strategies and improve student learning experiences. The Instructional Designer works with SON faculty, staff and administration to integrate best practice instructional design and adult learning preparation to enhance the quality of education provided by UVA School of Nursing faculty. The incumbent provides academic support services in instructional design for SON faculty members involved in developing, assessing, converting or enhancing courses with technology-enhanced teaching strategies.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with and support faculty to design/redesign in-person, online and hybrid courses. Provide consultation to faculty to review course content and identify innovative activities that support learning outcomes and opportunities for enhancements. Apply best practices and knowledge of instructional design and adult learning theory to the strategy, design and delivery of course offerings.
  • Assist in the creation of online activities, modules and assignments. Utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools, including on Apple platforms, to develop interactive and engaging online content.
  • Provide assistance and troubleshooting as they relate to course set-up, course instruction, learning management system features, captioning and live and recorded class sessions.
  • Prepare technology resources and support documents.
  • Establish and maintain communications with School faculty and staff.
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct professional development and training sessions for students, faculty and staff.
  • Provide one-on-one and group consultations with faculty to assist faculty in all aspects of teaching, including, but not limited to, aligning learning outcomes with assessments, using third-party tools and incorporating innovative and evidence-based pedagogies.
  • Promote inclusive pedagogy and universal design in learning. Provide orientation, training and support to faculty and other course authors who are new to online/hybrid course development and delivery.
  • Collaborate with faculty, SON IT and other stakeholders to select and integrate appropriate instructional technology. Coordinate with School of Nursing IT to purchase and install equipment and software as needed and to support the assessment and utilization of technical systems and equipment.
  • Provide leadership on projects related to course design and alignment with standards/guidelines, as well as the school transition to a new learning management system (LMS).
  • Stay current with recent research, trends and advancements in pedagogy, educational technologies and other related issues. Monitor and test current and innovative technologies and pedagogical strategies, and appropriately apply them.
  • Consult and collaborate with instructional design peers and others across the University.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with post-baccalaureate certificate or graduate degree in instructional design/instructional technology, educational technology, educational computing, instructional systems, educational psychology or a closely related subject area.
  • Up to 2 years of experience working directly with teachers using e-technology and learning pedagogies in the design or conversion of courses for various platforms using sound principles of instructional design and accessibility standards.
  • Direct experience in working with learning/course management systems, such as Canvas or other learning management system.
  • Teaching experience in K-12 or higher education.
  • Thorough knowledge of online pedagogy and learning theories/instructional design models.
  • Application and knowledge of adult learning principles in curriculum design.
  • Educational technology, instructional systems design and new learning technologies expertise.
  • Proficiency working with learning/course management systems and in applying a variety of software applications and web-based authoring and publishing systems (e.g., Articulate, Camtasia, Photoshop, Zoom, Microsoft Office, etc.).
  • Commitment to service with demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with faculty, staff and students.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Energetic self-starter who takes initiative in planning and problem solving.
  • Ability to understand, analyze and diagnose faculty, staff and student needs and to translate these needs into instructional solutions.
  • Fluency in Apple and Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree.
  • Instructional design experience at an institution of higher education.
  • Multimedia production experience (graphics, audio, video).
  • Teaching experience specifically using online technologies or technology-enhanced approaches.

Compensation:
The anticipated hiring tange for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs.
