The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia is seeking an experienced and collaborative Instructional Designer to join our engaging and collaborative Multimedia Design Team. This position is responsible for providing best-practice instructional design services to faculty developing and teaching in face-to-face, online and blended learning environments. Competitive applicants should have instructional design experience and have designed, managed and evaluated both face-to-face and online learning courses. Experience should be broad and include being well-versed in appropriate learning theories, conducting needs assessments and evaluations, working with multiple online learning management systems, and maintaining fluency with applicable instructional technology solutions.

Collaboration is a fundamental component of this position and this department. The candidate will be highly skilled at collaborating with faculty, subject matter experts, administrators and colleagues. And while the ability to work in a team environment will be crucial, so too is the ability to work independently—motivation and initiative are essential. This position requires someone who is organized, can set priorities, and is an effective time manager. The McIntire Media and Design Department is a fast-paced and often fluid environment. Deadlines may shift and the ability to be agile and flexible is crucial.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, instructional technology or related field (Master's preferred) and at least 3 years of instructional computing experience. 7 years of related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work on simultaneous projects, prioritizing and successfully meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Commitment to working in an environment that is dedicated to building diversity and instilling values related to equity and inclusion.
  • Experience working in higher education settings with faculty:
    • in instructional design and assessment
    • in online course design, development and assessment
    • developing support materials
  • Technical skills:
    • Ability to work using both PC and MAC platforms
    • Demonstrated expertise using online learning management systems, such as Blackboard and Canvas, to develop course content. This includes proficiency in using the specific tools within the LMS system to design course content and assessments.
    • Familiarity with online technology tools such as Tech Smith Camtasia and Snagit, Articulate Storyline and Adobe Captivate
    • Knowledge of Quality Matters, Online Learning Consortium and similar rubrics
    • Familiarity with Universal Design and other accessibility principles to ensure course content is accessible to all learners
    • Familiarity with HTML or HTML writers

Anticipated hiring range $65,000 - $79,000
