The Opportunity
The University of Virginia's Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost seeks an experienced, innovative and collaborative Executive Director of Online Learning. This inaugural position, reporting to the Vice Provost of Online Learning, is primarily responsible for helping UVA schools launch thriving online programs and working with stakeholders to shape the University's overall digital education strategy.

The Executive Director of Online Learning will be the primary liaison between UVA schools and the Provost's office, working closely with associate deans to identify and evaluate new opportunities, develop go-to-market strategies, negotiate partnerships, support school collaborations and create the conditions necessary for innovation. The Executive Director will manage the Director of Online Learning Strategy and new program startup funds and coordinate the activities of various departments across the University in support of schools.

This is a new initiative in the Provost's office with the ultimate goal of helping schools launch a thriving portfolio of online programs, based on UVA's distinct strengths, that expand access to UVA, serve students throughout their lives, and open pathways to residential programs. Key Responsibilities

Support UVA Schools to Launch Thriving Online Programs
  • Help schools develop new programs and go-to-market strategies by providing data analysis, expertise and access to a network of internal experts and external service providers.
  • Streamline the process of launching new programs by coordinating the activities of various departments across the University and shepherding proposals.
  • Create the conditions for innovation by developing key policies, refining processes and helping the University add new capacity.

Develop Partnerships That Build the University's Online Learning Capacity and Increase the Reach of its Programs
  • Help schools evaluate and negotiate new partnerships with online learning providers, employers, other postsecondary institutions and support organizations.
  • Identify opportunities for multiple schools to collaborate on new programs and partnerships.

Manage and Invest New Program Startup Funds
  • Provide startup funding in the form of grants and loans for new online programs that transform students lives, are in demand by learners, are financially healthy and align with strategic plan goals.

Collaborate with Stakeholders to Develop a University-wide Strategy for Online Learning
  • Work with stakeholders to shape a coherent, overall strategy that informs program development at individual schools and leads to a portfolio of online programs that meets University goals.

Candidate Profile
We seek a dynamic candidate with a demonstrated record of creative, inspiring and accomplished leadership in innovative online learning environments; someone who possesses the highest level of commitment to advancing the University's priorities and whose previous experience is consistent with UVA's commitment to be both great and good. Although the University will consider a range of profiles, expressions of interest are sought from candidates possessing the following:


Professional Experience
  • Significant experience leading highly successful client service engagements.
  • Demonstrated success managing program development for new postsecondary online learning programs using a broad range of functional skills, including academics, strategy, finance and human resources.
  • Ability to develop long-range goals and objectives while simultaneously managing execution and details across multiple projects and tasks.
  • Strong financial analysis and budget planning skills.
  • Proven collaborator in a highly matrixed environment (faculty, staff and administrators across the University) to drive successful outcomes.
  • Awareness of, respect for and adherence to policies and procedures (e.g., accreditation requirements, internal requirements, University contractual requirements, etc.).
  • Experience analyzing labor market, post-secondary institutional completions, internet search, digital marketing data and financial projections to determine the viability of new postsecondary online programs.
  • Minimum bachelor's degree; 7 years of experience.

Location
This position will be located in Charlottesville with a remote option possible for experienced candidates.


COVID Vaccination Requirement

Due to the scope of President Biden's Executive Order 14042 issued in early September, all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption. The University has updated policy SEC-045 to reflect these new requirements.

If hired by the Academic Division, excluding School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UVA Physicians Group, and the Health Systems Library, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to be vaccinated by January 4, 2022.
