The University of Virginia Library is seeking a Director of Technology Solutions to join our Information Technology team. Reporting to the Executive Director for Information Technology, the Director leads a team of software engineers and project managers that design and deliver integrated technology solutions that align to university library needs and strategies.


The director provides leadership on complex projects and serves as general team lead/project manager. They will lead their team to assist users/stakeholders in articulating long and short-term systems or service needs, translating those needs into technical specifications to produce user requirements for service development projects. These efforts may include project planning, market scans & solution evaluations, implementation and transition to service and partnering with the developer team when custom software development is needed.


The director oversees a team of analysts and engineers that supports the installation, use and development of third party and open-source solutions, as well as integration with existing infrastructure and services. The team will be expected to incorporate UX and Accessibility support, in partnership with the library's Communications team, to ensure continuous improvement and standards compliance. In addition, the director and their team will maintain documentation of solutions for training, finance, security and standards compliance tracking and establish and maintain vendor relationships and contracts.


The director is expected to build and maintain a framework of diversity, equity and inclusion into all recruitment, hiring and retention,assign and track program caseloads and support staff in professional development opportunities and required training. The director will manage the solutions budget (~$400K) in collaboration with Finance team and product managers.


Additionally, the director will participate in Library staff events, managers events, professional development and special projects and committee assignments. They will also be expected to collaborate with areas throughout the UVA Library and larger UVA community to develop and implement various systems that will benefit the academic research library environment. The director may also collaborate with non-UVA partners as part of community memberships that benefit the UVA Library and may represent the UVA Library at conferences and through external professional service opportunities.


Required Qualifications:

  • A high school siploma and 5 years of experience in systems analysis, implementation and/or design

  • Project management experience in an IT environment

  • Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal and collaborative skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an ALA- accredited MLIS/MIS in library and information science or advanced degree in a relevant discipline.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated commitment to a framework of diversity, equity and inclusion in all recruitment, hiring and retention.

  • Experience in an academic research library or other higher education environment.

  • Familiarity with Agile project management methodologies and tools.


Anticipated hiring range: $95,000 to $115,000


Physical Requirements:
This position requires extensive use of desktop computers, the role may require walking to and from meetings, as well as standing, bending and lifting up to 25 pounds.
