Director, Internal & Executive Communications

This role is responsible for planning, developing and overseeing implementation of the system-level internal and executive communications strategy for team members and key executives at UVA Health. Responsible for oversight of design/implementation of creative and impactful communications strategy for C-suite executives, including writing and editing, multimedia and creative design to lead a high-impact communications program. The ideal candidate will be exceptionally skilled at understanding how to capture and effectively reflect distinct executive voices. They will establish a foundation of excellence and a proven record of exceeding goals, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
  • Lead conceptualization and execution of compelling, strategic executive communications for internal and external audiences. Develop strategic, targeted and impactful communication that will inform and inspire.
  • Develop and evaluate short- and long-term goals and accomplishments for the Internal and Executive Communications teams.
  • Direct outstanding writing and content development that elevates the UVA Health brand and supports the mission, vision and values of the organization while capturing executive voice in a genuine, engaging way.
  • Collaborate effectively across functions and teams, building and maintaining strong relationships with leadership, senior clinicians, directors, managers and staff throughout the organization to direct the execution of internal communication messaging and initiatives. This includes using new vehicles to foster employee engagement, a just culture and a sense of community throughout the organization.
  • Orchestrate communications delivery through a variety of mediums, including print, digital, video and live events, working with appropriate partners internally and external vendors.
  • Partner in the development and execution of a social media strategy for executives that effectively leverages existing social media properties and consistently evaluates new opportunities to engage social media audiences.
  • Build and direct teams (direct reports and collaborative teams across the organization) to effectively execute communications strategies and plans swiftly while managing change and ambiguity.
  • Recruit as necessary, and train and mentor staff on the internal and executive communications, identifying opportunities for growth and staff development. Motivate and offer counsel to managers and team members.
  • Serve as a strategic communications consultant to UVA Health leadership while also being willing to roll up sleeves and help drive execution.
  • Collaborate effectively across functions and teams, cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including broader marketing teams, executives, clinical and operational leads, legal, finance, operations, etc.
  • Lead the measurement and analysis of metrics to inform communication strategies and senior leadership decision-making and drive continuous program improvement.
  • Lead joint institutional communication-focused activities with the UVA School of Medicine and the UVA School of Nursing, and partner with the University Physicians Group, UVA Community Health and other key stakeholder groups as appropriate to ensure consistency in strategy across all communications.
  • Manage communications budget, allocating departmental resources in accordance with the departmental budget to meet the highest standards of quality for a nationally renowned academic medical center.
  • Help create a culture in which everyone thrives with an emphasis on honoring and encouraging diversity of thought.
  • Partner with external, social and marketing teams to develop storylines and support executive readiness to engage in media relations, when appropriate.

Position Compensation Range: $118,123.20 - $188,988.80 Annually

  • 12+ years of experience in corporate communications, public relations or internal or executive communications.
  • Bachelor's degree (Communications, Public Relations, English, Journalism or Marketing degree preferred).
  • An agile, creative leader with experience with and insights into new and emerging trends across marketing, advertising, public relations, social media and executive and team member communications.
  • Proven experience working with executives, senior business and thought leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships of trust and confidence with senior leaders, peers and colleagues. Ability to collaborate, influence and effectively engage with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understanding of university health system marketing best practices, industry trends and direction.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic communications planning, analysis, writing and producing communications plans and materials, including presentations and presentation design skills.
  • Exceptional judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Demonstrated experience with digital communications strategies and new media.
  • Proficiency with web and marketing analytics platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to create effective relationships, influence and collaborate internally and externally at all levels among significant change and at times ambiguity.
  • Capacity to foster a positive environment of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to oversee the development of creative and strategic projects and inspire team members to achieve excellence in their work.
  • Genuine passion for overseeing communications that drive team member engagement, team member experience and executive thought leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-building acumen.
  • Effective organizational and project management skills to oversee multiple project teams, timelines and stakeholders.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
