Director, Internal Communications

This role is responsible for planning, developing, and overseeing implementation of the internal communications strategy for UVA Health. The Director will possess command of a wide range of communications specialty areas, including writing and editing, multimedia, and creative design to lead a high-impact communications program with multiple channels. The ideal candidate will be exceptionally skilled at understanding how to capture and reflect distinct leadership voices, effectively plan and execute change management initiatives, and leverage internal communications channels to inform and engage each of the 16,000+ team members across the Health System. They will have the desire to establish a foundation of excellence and a proven record of exceeding goals, both qualitatively and quantitatively. This position reports to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at UVA Health and supervises the internal communications team.
  • Leads conceptualization and execution of compelling, strategic communications for internal audiences. Develops strategic, targeted, and impactful communication that will inform and inspire.
  • Develops and evaluates creative communications strategies to improve the culture and image of the Health System.
  • Partners with the Director of Executive Communications and Strategic Initiatives to ensure coordination and collaboration across efforts.
  • Directs and produces outstanding writing and content development that elevates the UVA Health brand and supports the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Leads the team dedicated to internal communications deliverables, including editorial, technical, and logistical.
  • Orchestrates communications delivery through a variety of mediums, including print, digital, video, and live events, working with appropriate partners internally and external vendors.
  • Ensures consistent messaging of key Health System initiatives, events, and announcements to every facet of the Health System.
  • Builds and directs teams (direct reports and collaborative teams across the organization) to effectively execute communications strategies and plans swiftly while managing change and ambiguity.
  • Collaborates effectively across functions and teams, cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including broader marketing teams, executives, clinical and operational leads, legal, finance, operations, etc.
  • Leads the measurement and analysis of metrics to inform communication strategies and senior leadership decision-making and to drive continuous program improvement.
  • Leads joint institutional communication-focused activities with the UVA School of Medicine and the UVA School of Nursing, and partners with the University Physicians Group and other key stakeholder groups as appropriate.
  • Helps create a culture in which everyone thrives with an emphasis on inclusion and honoring and encouraging diversity of thought.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Position Compensation Range: $104,894.40 - $167,835.20 Annually

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: Bachelor's degree (communications, public relations, English, journalism, or marketing degree preferred).
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, or internal or executive communications.
  • Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
