The Patient Care Specialist 4 is responsible for providing clinical support to providers and patients in the Clinical Practice Group (CPG) offices and may include specialties such as dermatology, OBGYN, allergy and cardiology. These duties may include patient care, vital signs, assisting provider on procedures, performing various laboratory tests and quality control indicators, and telephone triage.

Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Complete initial and ongoing annual training with the applicable UVA Medical Center Department when required. Training/education/re-education as needed for additional supportive services through the UVA Medical Center department and/or Clinical Practice Group, UPG.
  • Room patient and complete intake process per protocols.
  • Administer medications and perform venipuncture and ambulatory procedures within scope of practice.
  • Laboratory duties, including performing point-of-care testing (POCT) and quality control indicators, preparing forms and following up on results.
  • Assist providers in procedures such as injections, biopsies, surgical excisions or procedures, and cosmetic treatments.
  • Use clinical equipment for testing as ordered.
  • Evaluate lab work and advise provider of critical values.
  • Manage EMR requirements to include inbasket, phone calls, prescriptions and results in a timely manner.
  • Answer telephones, confirm appointments and maintain appointment schedule following office scheduling procedures.
  • Obtain prior authorizations, waivers and consent for medications and procedures as needed.
  • Triage patients and advise per protocol.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory and ordering of medical supplies for the dermatology clinic.
  • Maintain medical instruments and ensure clinical areas are appropriately stocked and cleaned.
  • Document and charge capture for service rendered in medical record.
  • Other duties that may be specific to satellite medical practice/specialty clinic.

Non-Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Provide administrative support as needed.

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Two years of experience working in a specialty practice preferred. Knowledge of OSHA guidelines and Universal Precautions protocols.
  • Licensure: Current Virginia RN or LPN license.

General busy clinical environment. The incumbent will be working in a office and patient examination room and is required to help move patients when needed and standing during portions of the physical examination. Physical activity required would include the ability to lift/push/pull 20-50 pounds and would involve standing for prolonged periods of time, as well as frequently bending/stooping and traveling. Physical hazards include potential exposure to body fluids and associated pathogens/infectious disease, as well as potential exposure to chemicals.
