Institutional Research and Analytics (IRA) at the University of Virginia seeks a dynamic and highly motivated individual to fill the role of Data Specialist. A unit reporting to the Office of the Provost, IRA conducts institutional research and supports assessment at the University of Virginia. IRA provides accurate data, reliable information and reporting, as well as expert analysis and guidance on use of data in support of the University's teaching, research, and service mission. IRA serves all members of the University's academic community with support for planning, decision-making, policy development, assessment, and compliance requirements.

The Data Specialist supports IRA reporting and analytics requirements by understanding the content, format, and data definitions of University data sets — student, employee, financial aid, and others — and applying that knowledge to a data request. The Data Specialist identifies, collects, analyzes, and reports student and employee data in support of external reporting requirements and internal planning and decision-making, and effectively reports and communicates the findings to a variety of constituencies. The Data Specialist provides analysis and interpretation of data and promotes accuracy, integrity, and consistency of data in support of data governance objectives. The Data Specialist collaborates with internal and external colleagues to effectively leverage available data and identify required additional data to further institutional planning and compliance objectives. The ideal candidate will have experience in the phases of enterprise data lifecycles in higher education (e.g., student data), including data acquisition, cleaning and processing, documentation, data validation and analysis, and visualization.


Responsibilities:

External Reporting Requirements (50%)
  • Manage deadlines, collaboration, and planning necessary to respond to external data collection requirements (Common Data Set [CDS], Petersons, College Board, USNWR, and others) throughout the calendar year using existing data analytics platforms (Qlik Sense and Qlik View) and the student information system to collect and summarize the data in the formats needed for each.
  • Assist other analysts with state and federal reporting requirements or other analytics projects (e.g., collaborative analysis with other higher education institutions) as needed. Leverage external collaborations/networks to inform IRA practices.

Internal Data Analysis and Support (50%)
  • Respond to requests for information from UVA administrators/staff/students, external agencies, and private citizens. Coordinate production and delivery of reports and/or analytics using existing data analytics platforms and internal and external data sets.
  • Assist with data validation, documentation, and data quality reviews of new and existing dashboards and institutional datasets.
  • Facilitate expanded use of the IRA resources to support departmental planning through outreach and response to user requests. Engage with departments to understand their data needs to determine how best to satisfy their requirements.
  • Assist with publication of data on IRA website; manage production of publicly available dashboards.
  • Participate in work groups, attend meetings, and present information as requested.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in the behavioral sciences, business administration, math, education, accounting, computer science, or related field required. A master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of four years of data analytics experience performing data mining, reporting, and analysis. Experience with higher education data preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis and advanced Excel skills essential.
  • Self-motivated with high standards for rigorous and detailed work.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required.
  • Experience with data visualization software (Tableau and/or Qlik Sense preferred).
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule, track, and manage multiple activities and projects essential.
  • Collegiality, intellectual flexibility, and ability to work with professionals in different fields critical.
  • Experience in higher education and in collection and use of data to support decision making preferred.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA with the ability to work a hybrid schedule.

Anticipated start date of early September 2022. The position will remain open until filled. Review of applications will begin on August 26, 2022. This is an exempt-level, benefitted position.
