The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia seeks a Data Science Laboratory Specialist in deep learning (DL) and computer vision to perform develop new methods and algorithms focused on high precision medical imaging analysis. Our aim is to apply deep learning to medical imaging for assisted diagnosis, preventive interventions, and knowledge mining from large-scale clinical datasets of multiple imaging and non-imaging resources.

This position offers the opportunity to craft deep learning approaches to solving particular medical imaging problems to improve and invent new & effective clinical workflows. As well as design and implement medical imaging, computer vision, machine learning techniques to solve specific problems.

This position requires in depth understanding of the latest DL research and collaboration with diverse teams, including DL researchers, clinical and research physicians, medical imaging researchers, and software engineers. The position will generate top-tier technical/clinical publications. The Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students on multiple projects along with the Primary Investigator (PI) and faculty members at the University is also required.


The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of medical imaging visualization and processing packages is strongly preferred.
  • At least two years of relevant work experience in computer vision, medical imaging, deep learning, or statistical learning.
  • Expertise in supervised and unsupervised learning methods, using deep learning methods including convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, autoencoders, and adversarial learning.
  • Knowledge of understanding and practicing deep learning and medical imaging.
  • Rapid prototyping skills with medical imaging applications using Python; C++, Matlab.
  • Excellent knowledge and development experience of common deep learning frameworks and packages (Pytorch, Tensorflow, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills.



  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience: Three years of experience. Six years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.


This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. The position is funded for two years with the possibility of renewal, based on satisfactory performance.
