The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) in the School of Education and Human Development seeks applicants for Research Specialist (wage) positions to collect data in K-3 classrooms in the Northern Virginia and Tidewater regions. The Research Specialist (Wage) collects data for the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) pilot project, which aims to iteratively develop, test and refine PALS for use with students in grades K to 3. Incumbents will administer assessments of students' language and literacy. Duties also include data entry, data uploading, ensuring data integrity and providing feedback to improve and refine the instruments. Work activities will be intermittent but will generally require up to 20 hours/week from December 2021 through May 2022.

High school diploma (or equivalent) AND one year of experience working with children in an educational setting or an out-of-school setting (such as a summer camp or an after-school program). A bachelor's degree in social science, education or related field is preferred. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population are essential. Ability to use and troubleshoot technology is required. In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook and Word) and use of the internet; proficiency with laptops, tablets and/or PCs; and experience uploading/downloading information using cloud storage platforms are required. Individuals with Spanish proficiency are highly encouraged to apply!

Reliable transportation for traveling between schools is required. Incumbents must also be able to attend training sessions in December or January. Training sessions may include a combination of video conference and in-person meetings.

Pay range: $17 - $21 per hour

This position is also open to current UVA students.
