Data Analytics Developer

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business, one of the world's leading business schools, seeks a Data Analytics Developer on the Strategic IT Data & Analytics team. This techno functional role conducts both business analysis and development activities. The ideal candidate is committed and collaborative, able to understand and synthesize business needs and success drivers into transformational dashboards and reports. The ideal candidate is also a teacher, training designated users on the distributed team on data analytics development and best practices.

This position is located in-person in Charlottesville, VA with some flexibility for hybrid work.

Specific Responsibilities:

Business Analysis
  • Translate business requirements to technical resources and translate technical documentation into terminology and language understood by the business.

Data Analysis
  • Explore large, complex, and loosely defined data sets to create and develop dashboards.

Requirements Gathering
  • Lead business analysis and requirements-gathering activities to capture and document data user stories, use cases, workflows, and metrics that inform success for the Darden community.
  • Create requirements/specifications for ETL developers to build data pipelines.

Data Modeling
  • Develop data models to make data usable and value-added for analytics.
  • Develop and maintain tables and views in SQL to support data transformation and data shaping.

Power BI Development
  • Develop and administer Power BI deployment pipelines.
  • Maintain the Power BI security framework.

Relationship Management
  • Work collaboratively as a trusted partner with team members in supported business units to maintain existing and deliver new analytics solutions.
  • Teach and advise team members in supported business on analytics development and practices.
  • Lead community gatherings for Power BI developers focused on tips and best practices.

Education and Professional Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS, computer engineering, business administration, or related discipline needed with at least five years of professional work experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Power BI or other business intelligence tools.
  • Knowledge and experience working with SQL.
  • Ability to design, document, and communicate models.
  • Comfortable working in an agile, iterative development process.
  • Self-motivated and self-managing with strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge and experience working with R and/or Python preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience working with API and web services preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in statistical modeling preferred.

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.
