Assesses patients with impairment of human movement or musculoskeletal abnormalities in order to determine a functional intervention. Patient assessment may include, but is not limited to, the evaluation of: anthropometric data, cognition, circulation, skin integrity, protective sensation, pain, central and peripheral nerve integrity, respiratory capacity, biomechanics, gain analysis including temporal and spatial assessment, range of motion, muscle strength, posture and balance, etc.
Formulates a treatment plan based upon the comprehensive assessment to design an orthosis or prosthesis to alleviate limitations and enhance function. Orthotic or prosthesis treatment includes, but is not limited to: verification of prescription/documentation, evaluation of the prescription rationale, a needs assessment based on patient and/or caregiver input, development of functional goals, analysis of structural and design requirements, assessment of potential physical and occupational therapy requirements, and consultation with and/or referral to other health care professionals.
Develops and implements a follow-up treatment plan that ensures successful orthotic or prosthetic outcomes, patient health and quality of life which includes, but is not limited to documentation of functional changes, formulation of modifications to ensure successful outcomes, reassessment of patient expectations, reassessment of treatment objectives, development of long term treatment plan, confirmation of patient education and instruction, and evidence based practice.
Adheres to applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations.
Follows patient care guidelines and procedures and maintains a safe and professional environment for patient care.
Uses the electronic medical record to properly record progress notes and to find and utilize pertinent patient information. Completes and has patient sign delivery form and obtains waiver, if required. Selects appropriate HCPCS codes related to the device and forwards them to the billing staff (along with supportive documentation) for validation and entry.
Promotes competency and enhancement of orthotic and/or prosthetic professional practice to contribute to the profession's body of knowledge includes, but is not limited to participation in continuing education, training of residents/students, clinical research, evidence based studies, promotion of public awareness of the orthotic and/or prosthetic profession, consumer organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Provide in-services and lectures to physicians, residents, therapists, and other healthcare professionals throughout the UVA Health System and surrounding areas.
Provides resident and staff educational training as requested by the Health System or individual departments.
Attends formal continuing educational meetings and seminars necessary for professional and staff development.
Presents, as schedule allows, at professional meetings.
Serves as the supervisor for the technical staff. These responsibilities include monitoring and approving staff time and attendance, reviewing and implementing performance and productivity standards, and completing evaluations as required by Human Resources.
Leads the technical staff by developing goals and objectives and establishing priorities.
Inspires staff confidence, appropriate risk-taking, and achieving high standards.
Demonstrates ability to effect collaborative alliances within and outside P&O and fosters trust, credibility, and understanding.
Leads or participates on special projects and facilitates unscheduled orders that are required in the daily operations of the P&O division.
Maintains a continuous inventory system. Coordinates processes to ensure the successful operation of the system to include computer storage of information and periodic hand counting as deemed necessary. Establishes protocol for removal of materials from inventory, and develops written policies.
Oversees periodic facility certification for assigned area.
Ensures that all staff members utilize EPIC to document the provided care such that all patient notes and supportive documentation are in EPIC within 24 hours of the provided service.
Ensures that each staff member has a complete understanding and utilization of proper HCPCS coding and billing procedures from prior-authorizations to the delivery of the device
Ensures that patient services are properly registered/scheduled within the Health System's provided applications before any services are provided.
Ensures that a delivery slip is signed by each patient once the work is completed and the device is provided to the patient.
Ensures that all supervised billing is forwarded to the assigned Billing/Coding Specialist with required/ fully completed and signed documents within 7 days of the date of service.
Reviews provided monthly financial reports and understands any budget variances and takes appropriate action.
Helps to identify all costs associated to a given device/service to assist the Department Business office to develop appropriate fees and/or contracts which will allow the Division to maintain a profit.
Facilitates locating new outreach locations and initiates contacts with both Department and UPG leadership to see if new off-ground activities are feasible including forecasting volumes and related planning activities.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from an accredited program and an (National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education) NCOPE accredited residency program.
Experience: Five years of supervisory experience.
Licensure: American Board for Certification (ABC) certification.
Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling (distance: 1 - 2 miles/day), climbing (ladder, steps) and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. This job may be exposed to electric current while working on electronic equipment, exposed to extreme temperatures in steam tunnels and required to stand on different surfaces.

Due to the scope of President Biden's Executive Order 14042 issued in early September, all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption.
