The COO reports to the CEO of the UVA Medical Center and is responsible for optimizing the clinical operations of the Medical Center, improving UVA's competitive position, and ensuring the Medical Center's future strategic success.

The COO directs all aspects of clinical operations across the care continuum. The COO is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and monitoring the day-to-day operations of the organization. The COO will work collaboratively with senior leadership and members of the medical staff to oversee the operational and clinical management functions of this organization. The COO is responsible for the effective operation, administration and evaluation of UVA Medical Center.

The COO has operational accountability for the following operations: Perioperative Services, Radiology, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Home Health, Patient Experience, Environment of Care, Safety & Security, Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy, Transport, Facilities, Clinical Engineering, Transitional Care Hospital and Ivy Mountain Orthopedic center.

The COO fosters a culture of lean management, daily management and quality and ensures commitment to problem solving. The COO partners and collaborates with clinical chairs, faculty, staff and leadership to drive the enterprise to the highest levels of achievement and operational effectiveness.

The COO will be a key member of the senior executive leadership team of the Medical Center and will assume an active role in the development and implementation of long-range plans, goals and objectives for the organization. The COO will provide leadership in the development and implementation of operational and growth goals to achieve targeted objectives in quality, safety, value, service, patient experience and employee and medical staff engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Committed to the successful execution of multi-year strategies and systemwide goals that improve clinical quality and safety, seize growth opportunities, enhance the patient experience, ensure value-driven and efficient use of resources, promote the training and development of the workforce, develop stronger alignment with the medical staff, and provide new and enhanced services that respond to community needs, as well as differentiate UVA Medical Center in a competitive and dynamic regional market.
  • Provide straightforward and transparent leadership and guidance in improving operational performance and promoting real-time problem solving, while developing and deploying a results-oriented, accountable, responsive and accessible leadership and management team.
  • Provide leadership to foster a culture to attract, recruit, develop, motivate, reward and retain high-caliber employees essential for organizational success. Develop people and systems to provide a talented, caring and highly competent staff committed to patient and family-centered care in alignment with UVA's mission and values.
  • Facilitate an institutional mindset for clinical innovation through business processes and performance measures. Provide leadership and guidance in the development of effective accountability systems that link individual, departmental, organizational and systemwide priorities, goals and objectives. In this context, help promote an organization-wide culture that is responsive, results-oriented, efficient and accountable.
  • Promote and support physician alignment activities that 1) recognize and communicate the importance of partnering with physicians; 2) actively involve medical staff in key decision-making and core program development; 3) engage physicians in defining and pursuing patient safety, quality and performance improvement initiatives; and 4) acknowledge and promptly respond to the day-to-day needs and concerns of the medical staff.
  • Actively engage management team and staff to support culture and goals of providing the highest level of clinical care, including meeting HCAHPS and CGCAHPS targets, as well as identifying a physician partner(s) who will champion patient experience initiatives and research to help enhance research knowledge and application.
  • Proactively anticipate and respond to changes in the economic, health care and regulatory environments that could impact departmental financial, service, community, regulatory and leadership development goals.
  • Support achievement of organizational goals by developing programs and communications vehicles to enhance relationships with physicians and encourage physician partnerships. Demonstrate a strategic, political and operational understanding of physician concerns and issues.
  • Integrate UVA Health's strategic plan into the operations and other areas of responsibilities to meet the goals of the health system.
  • In partnership with the CEO and clinical and administrative leadership, ensure that the operational and budgetary management systems and processes are in place to meet and maintain annual organizational goals in achieving 1) exceptional clinical outcomes; 2) exceptional patient, employee and physician satisfaction; and 3) exceptional financial outcomes (meet or exceed budget targets). Prioritize the utilization of resources for safe and successful operations.
  • Develop effective communication mechanisms with the medical staff, working collaboratively with physicians and engaging them in appropriate committees and task forces within the Medical Center.
  • Continually foster open and ongoing communication and flow of information amongst and between medical staff, employees and administration.
  • Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission, Center for Medicaid Services, Department of Health and Family Services, local authorities having jurisdiction and any other regulatory bodies related to the operations of UVA Medical Center and other areas of responsibility.
  • Effect the cultural and operational changes necessary to transform the health care system in light of UVA Health's transition towards population-based health care.
  • Provide leadership, direction and education in the recruitment, ongoing assessment, mentoring and development of a high-performance, accountable, results-oriented, visible and responsive leadership team.
  • In partnership with the executive team, work to create a culture of leadership in which problem-solving and decision-making are collegial, decisive, action-oriented and associated with appropriate timelines and accountabilities. Promote and assist in ensuring a cultural of inclusion and diversity within the Medical Center operations.
  • Assuming a visible and contributing role in the community as a senior leader of UVA Medical Center, he/she will participate in key public relation and communication strategies which emphasizes the value and community benefit associated with the Medical Center and the system.
  • Ensure hospital operations are conducted with the highest standards of quality and integrity.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the communities served through appropriate community involvement.
  • Facilitate the identification, development and implementation of new programs and services.
  • Contribute to the academic mission of the health system by fostering a learning environment that supports the educational and research experiences for faculty, residents, students and staff.

Position Compensation Range: $311,667.20 - $498,659.00 Annually

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Master's degree must be obtained within 4 years of hire or transfer.

EXPERIENCE:
  • 10+ years of progressive senior executive leadership experience with extensive knowledge of current health care administration principles and practices.
  • Extensive experience in clinical operations, cost and resource management, and customer service excellence.
  • Experience within medium/large, complex integrated delivery systems and/or academic medical center.

OTHER SKILLS:
  • Proven medical staff relationship-building skills accompanied by a clear, consistent and effective communication style and the ability to be responsive and decisive in responding to medical staff.
  • An entrepreneurial orientation, strong business acumen and the knowledge base to apply established business development principles to health care delivery.
  • Agile in the application of the science of execution and improvement to operational levers across the health system with documented improved results.
  • Demonstrated track record working within a metrics-driven, results-oriented leadership model associated with a commitment to maintaining the critical balance between operational measures and quality, safety, patient satisfaction and employee engagement measures.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills (oral and written) are necessary in order to deal effectively in delicate, sensitive and/or complex situations with a wide variety of influential internal and external personnel and to make presentations before governmental, processional and regulatory agencies.

COVID Vaccination Requirement
