CASTL Senior Instructional Design and Technology Specialist

The Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks a full-time Senior Instructional Design and Technology Specialist. This is a fully remote position. It may require occasional travel to meetings and programs.

This position will focus on creating online training and resources for adult learners, specifically early childhood educators and school leaders. The position will support the statewide expansion of the STREAMin3 curriculum model and the online Early Childhood Education (ECE) Resource Hub through a partnership and funding from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). The work is highly collaborative and this position will operate as part of an existing instructional technology team.

Ideal candidates should have strong instructional design experience, knowledge of adult learning theory, and ability to work with multiple online learning managements systems and content management systems to design online learning and support learners. The candidate must demonstrate an ability to work independently, lead collaborations with colleagues, and deliver effective solutions to complex design or technology support challenges. In addition, an ability to translate learning and content from face-to-face formats into effective web-based products is key.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Work closely with faculty and staff to develop effective online training for adult learners.
  • Translate face-to-face learning or content for print into effective web-based products.
  • Manage the design of course materials in learning management systems (LMS), such as Canvas, Catalog and Brightspace.
  • Lead, train and support internal staff and online learners in the use of existing LMS tools and features.
  • Create instructional videos to support learners' use of online tools.
  • Provide ongoing instructional design and technology support to coaches, teachers and leaders to improve the design of webinars, training and other learning products.
  • Be able to multitask across various tasks and coordinate with multiple stakeholders. Produce work with great attention to detail and high quality.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be work independently, take initiative and solve complex problems on their own with innovative and flexible solutions.
  • Have excellent organizational, communication and time management skills.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: Three years of instructional computing experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications
A strong preference will be given to candidates that meet some or all of the preferred qualifications, which include:
  • Master's degree in instructional/educational technology or a related field, or equivalent experience of five years or more.
  • Experience designing for or supporting staff and learning in the use of online learning tools or learning management system.
  • Experience working independently and making decisions to solve complex instructional design or technology challenges that arise.
  • The ability to create short instructional videos.
  • Working knowledge of instructional design theories and adult learning theories.
  • Experience supporting or designing learning products specifically for the field of early childhood.
  • Experience working with curriculum training.
  • Strong working knowledge of screencasting or video-editing software.
  • Strong working knowledge of LMS and CMS components.

Compensation Information
Salary range: $63,000-$75,000, commensurate with education and experience, including UVA benefits.

The position will remain open until filled. This is an exempt-level, benefited position. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. This restricted position is a one-year appointment, and continuation beyond one year is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This is a fully remote position. It may require occasional travel to meetings and programs.

Physical Demands
