The University of Virginia, School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking Business Analyst/Data Analyst 3 or 4 to support its Business Intelligence (BI) Program under the Chief Data Analytics Officer (CDAO). This initiative provides BI tools and services for the administrative staff and leaders of the School of Medicine to make better and faster decisions, gain new insights and optimize business processes. In order to deliver these tools and services, this initiative is focused on the maintenance and enhancement of an enterprise data warehouse that integrates data from multiple sources to satisfy the reporting requirements for decision-making.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Gathering requirements, analyzing data sets and documenting processes to capture business and end-user needs. Working with stakeholders to identify specific data sets needed to solve business problems.
  • Working with business partners and data owners to understand requirements for data use, analysis, accessibility and quality.
  • Prioritizing needs within and across projects based on business impact.
  • Communicating solution tradeoffs to business partners to frame and influence project decisions.
  • Engaging data visualization team members to communicate solution vision and priorities.
  • Collaborating with data operations teams to integrate data into the data warehousing structure and understand how information is stored, modeled and tagged.
  • Assessing the risks of solution options and developing plans to mitigate them.
  • Supporting enterprise data strategy and organizational change management.
  • Defining, setting up and executing test cases to validate that the solution meets functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Understanding the decision-making process, workflows and business and information needs of business unit heads and service manager/owners.
  • Supporting user experience specialists and information architects to enhance information visualization through the development of dashboards and user interfaces.
  • Working closely with source system owners, architects and business units for knowledge sharing, mentoring and training.
  • Determining and documenting data definitions and other metadata contents by engaging key stakeholders. Ensuring consistency in data definitions across all projects.
  • Acting as a go-to-person for end users to interpret and use information.
  • Identifying and aggregating data from internal and external sources.
  • Identifying new opportunities to leverage data and to integrate data or applications to enhance business value.
  • Identifying, mediating and eliminating data quality issues. Answering user questions about reporting, and developing ad hoc solutions to data needs and requests as needed.
  • Maintaining high UI and data quality standards through ongoing testing.
  • Developing training infrastructure and materials and training users to utilize BI tools in an effective manner to make strategic and tactical decisions.

  • Proficiency in Excel; working knowledge of various databases, SQL and software programs. Working knowledge of data management. Working knowledge of BI tools, such as Tableau or PowerBI.
  • Experience with data modeling tools, defining and documenting business glossary and data definitions.

Minimum Requirements Business Analyst/Data Analyst 3:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in data analytics, data science, computer science, management information systems, finance, accounting, statistics or related field.
  • Experience: At least three years of experience as a data analyst, business intelligence analyst, market research analyst, financial analyst, statistician or equivalent roles. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Minimum Requirements Business Analyst/Data Analyst 4:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in data analytics, data science, computer science, management information systems, finance, accounting, statistics or related field.
  • Experience: At least five years of experience as a data analyst, business intelligence analyst, market research analyst, financial analyst, statistician or equivalent roles. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Additional Required Experience:
  • Experience with consumer-level data for the purposes of analysis, reporting and/or marketing.
  • Experience with business analysis.
  • Experience in other IT roles or functions such as quality assurance/testing, development, enterprise architecture or project management.
  • Experience working on a project using Agile or iterative methods.
  • Familiarity with company structure and operations outside of IT.
  • Strong Excel and SQL skills.

The ideal candidate will have experience in Tableau or PowerBI with the implementation of data warehouse projects and working knowledge of Alteryx or similar data mining tools.

This position is eligible for a full or partial remote work schedule. A partial remote schedule would include three days per week in the Charlottesville office and two days per week from a remote location. Fully remote candidates will be required to attend several days of onboarding activities in Charlottesville at the commencement of employment and will be required to attend in-service activities in the Charlottesville office several times per year.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. Priority review of applications will begin on November 30, 2021, but the positions will remain open until filled.
