Lab and Research Technician 1 employees focus on performing routine research tasks and developing skills. They assume routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures. Lab and Research Technician 1 employees perform tasks as assigned by supervisor.

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia seeks a Laboratory Specialist to oversee and conduct daily operations in the Parichy Lab (http://dparichy.as.virginia.edu/) fish facility, which maintains over 150 genetic stocks of zebrafish and related species in state-of-the-art aquatic housing, comprising more than 1800 tanks.

Major duties include:
  • Daily checks of fish health and mechanical systems.
  • Animal husbandry, including feedings.
  • Continuous culturing of live food (rotifers).
  • Inventory and ordering of fish-related supplies.
  • Management of undergraduate student helpers.
  • Adherence to federal, state and laboratory-specific animal care and use guidelines and oversight of other researcher activities to ensure compliance with such guidelines.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.

This is a restricted position contingent on continued funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:
  • At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience.
    • Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience working with zebrafish, other fishes or other vertebrates in a research laboratory or other professional setting.
  • Knowledge of tropical fish care and breeding.
  • Observational skills adequate to identify possible problems with the habitat systems or animal health.
  • Ability to follow set lab policies and procedures and adhere to regulatory guidelines in daily work.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to provide direct support to leaders as needed.
  • Candidates with a strong work ethic, some experience of animal care, and a work history in retail, restaurants or other service industries are strongly encouraged to apply.

Licensure:
  • None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
